#IDEs

Beware the IDEs of March. Especially those with an extension model. Or built with Electron.

It seems to me this could be useful in other ways too...

I'm trying out #CommonLisp plugins for various #IDEs and striking out each time. Am I really stuck with Emacs or Lem? I haven't done much lisp in the last 10 years, and I can hardly remember what I used before. I'm not certain, but I think I just used Vim and ran a REPL in a shell and would just run a command from the REPL to reload a file. I think I used Slimv for awhile, too, but I remember it being very buggy. Any Common Lispers out there that use something other than Emacs/Lem?

[2009] When does technology pass from being a tool to being a crutch?

On the fear of ‘systemic deskilling’… turns out 2009 programmers were worried about #IDEs and the distinction between cognitive process and naive tool use when programming 😏 No one even imagined that programmers would want to use tools that generate code that looks right but fundamentally isn’t. And yet, here we are.

How many hyped #IDEs must a programmer walk down before they stick with #Emacs (or even #vim)?

Instead, they will migrate to the next hype tool for the upcoming few months/years ...

🤷

A lot of my co-workers use graphical code-editors — mostly VScode but occasionally editing straight in #GitHub or #GitLab — or even full-fledged #IDEs. Seems like very few of those tools enforce useful #CommitMessage. When I'm writing commit-messages — be they individual commits or part of a merge-commit — I'm trying to leave a "here's what I did and why" documentation-trail. Even if someone is competent at reading code, a good commit message can help with more-quickly understanding what's going on (especially if, like me, you're working across projects, across code-bases and across languages and/or frameworks).

🤡 Oh, look! Another attempt to turn into a bloated wannabe Visual Studio Code for folks who can't handle a real text editor. 🤦‍♂️ Because nothing screams "beginner-friendly" like drowning Emacs in a sea of configurations to chase the shiny IDE crowd. 🌊🔧

Many #IDEs integrate #AI into the UI, making suggestions. They usually provide some way to check usage/tokens used.
Talking with some friends and team mates, I am struggling to compare the different experiences: some say that they cannot go back, others that it was bothering them.

I am looking for a way to measure on IDEs how many suggestions are added to be able to compare "AI suggestion ratio".
Is there a way to track/log how many suggestions are used/added/accepted into the source code?
