I'm very excited to join the opening reception for Desert Forest: Life with Joshua trees next Saturday at the Lancaster Museum of Art and History! Come see artworks about my favorite spiky desert plants and grab a copy of the exhibition book, which has two essays I coauthored with collaborating Joshua tree scientists

Great reporting on our new reconstruction of Joshua tree flowering trends today at @latimes

"It’s the first systematic examination of exactly what triggers the spiky, Seussian succulents to mast, or flower, the first step in their reproductive process."

NEW from my lab in Ecology Letters: Machine learning trained on >10k iNaturalist records let us "hindcast" Joshua trees' flowering back over the 20th Century. The hindcast recovers flowering events recorded in field notes, herbarium records, and newspaper archives. Joshua trees now flower a bit more often than they once didβ€” but that's probably not good for the trees overall

As #California’s #climate grows ever more hostile, a #JoshuaTree rescue plan takes shape latimes.com/environment/story/

"Among other barriers to relocation, western #JoshuaTrees rely on a single species of yucca #moth to pollinate them. They also require a unique, underground network of #fungi... Instead, the Department is focusing on protecting #trees in select locations where they stand the best chance of survival... to identify refugia where they can deploy every defense in their arsenal"

Spent a very nice if quite hot couple of days in the desert, inventorying Joshua trees with summer research students

Three people standing around a Joshua tree: one trimming a leaf for a DNA tissue sample, one with a clipboard and pencil taking notes, and one holding up a graduated measuring rod and a whiteboard marked with accessioning informationA view of open desert scrubland dotted with distant Joshua trees, under clear blue sky streaked with cirrus cloudsA somewhat blurred image of red-rock cliffs under a starry skyA Joshua tree less than half a meter tall, growing almost under the canopy of a larger shrub

and one for the nature folks ^_^ I can't use this for the daily thing as it's a couple years old, but something from when I was still in SoCal (I don't *think* I've shared here before?), not properly in Joshua Tree State Park, but kind of in the vicinity, in Saddle Butte, they really do seem like an alien landscape!

@siin. Congratulations on passing the Wilderness First Responder course. Your family is better prepared for emergencies. I understand lunch breaks in the Joshua trees is a good place to be contemplative. #joshuatrees, #wildernessfirstaid.
