Home sweet home.

@CTGT and I enjoyed watching Carolina Chickadee parents come and go from building their nest in a tree scrag; a fitting moment during our Mother’s Day hike.

A student asks me a question about #optimisation and #nesting so i'm back into "16 Case stories, re-imagining the practice of layout" with @colm @Femke @Ludi #OpenSourcePublishing
Published in 2012
"a catalogue put together as part of an attempt to rethink #layout tools, and features case stories that range from historical to present, on to the imaginary and speculative. The ‘camera-ready copy’ of this book was created on a pen #plotter: this has required a rethinking of the workflow, including a special font stack built upon engraving tools, to be able to use stroke based fonts."
Tools: #ActiveArchives, #LibreOffice, #Inkscape, Custom #Herschey Inkscape plugin, #Roland pen plotter, laser printer, glue and scissors. Printing: Risograph and Roland Pen Plotter.

Ludi Loiseau. drawing for Ligue based on isotype This image was drawn in llustrator. The top image is o screenshot from the wireframe preview, exposing the actual construction of the vector image. The image below is a preview of the rendered output. The image is the result of o mix of overlaps, linestyles and other transformations. Some of these steps are “baked”. or disengaged . meaning their transformations cre processed into an actuel stroke. Others are live effects opplied to vector-objects. The two images were juxtaposed because we needed to check if the drawing would not produce problems in production. Machines such as lasercutters and plotters, produce output based on the actual stroke of the image. How about? There could be an in-between view where wireframe and final rendering would be overlayed. It would be useful to expose more of the intermediate steps between the construction of the wireframe and how they are processed."An article on "Multi-level type design" and another on "Nested interface optimisation"

Which brings me back to this year's #nesting.
Eggs always hatch by mid-late May.
I watch daily, walk slowly to Mother Goose on #nest. I believe it's still Gail, but last year bird flu affected Gordon and she may have a new mate.

Face on, a Mother Goose is looking through your soul, to see if you are a nice person. They could hurt you (the gander is behind me) but I walk slow, talk softly and she poses without fear.

Reviewing my week of photos, and found a little more of my STAR GOOSE. It must be getting close to hatching time, as she adds some straw and twigs to shape the nest bigger

I CAUGHT HER!
I study the nest every day. I walk slowly to check on Mom, but she never seems to leave the nest.
This is not the second Gander below. That's the mother eating, my photo shoot (just downloaded from camera) shows the nest is vacant. First time I've seen that.

She's a star. I have some video too.

For the third time we know of, birds have chosen to nest in the window box on the front of our house, right outside the living room window among the artificial flowers. First it was robins, then wrens. This time we think they are house finches. (They are well hidden under the fake foliage.)

The European stonechat (Saxicola rubicola) is a small passerine bird that was formerly classed as a subspecies of the common stonechat. Long considered a member of the thrush family, Turdidae, genetic evidence has placed it and its relatives in the Old World flycatcher family, Muscicapidae. It is found across Europe, as far east as Ukraine and the South Caucasus, and in parts of North Africa

A day at the Zoo (Beekse Bergen)

The Amazon is the heart of our planet—cooling our world, fuelling life, and protecting millions of species. But greed is destroying it. This year, all eyes will be at the heart of the Amazon because of the Climate Conference #COP30 which is going to be held in the city of Belém in Brazil. It's our chance to take real action against illegal gold mining. The world is watching. Will you stand with us? Add your voice: https://act.gp/3FQtPRm#RespectTheAmazon

Dear Friends,
It's #mating and #nesting season. These big #birds are in full intimidation mode protecting nests and asserting dominance. Long Islanders have grown accustomed to Canada Geese. The return of Wild Turkeys is just the last few years. Both can injure people. Don't turn your back 🫣

A Cooper’s hawk is nesting in a nearby tree and an Eastern Phoebe is nesting above a light fixture in my yard. Both species nested here last year though the Cooper’s hawk is building it’s nest in a new tree about 30 meters from last year’s site. #bird #nesting
