@hemish Kashmiri oppression is a reality - even before the BJP came to power - our "brave" jawans have raped, killed and tortured people through extra-judicial immunity in the valley under the INC.

These kids see their parents and elders suffer. They live in poverty and joblessness. They became a monster as a product of their environment. Why will they spare the tax-payers funding the brutality?

On May 5th, Denver City Council will vote on the Denver Police contract with Flock Group Inc for a mass surveillance technology that tracks vehicles across the city. Mass surveillance networks like these are a threat to all. And DPD just told local news last week that the FBI has open access to Denver’s database.

As the Trump administration intensifies its attacks on immigrants and vulnerable groups, our local elected officials must stand with our community and put an end to this dangerous surveillance.

In a move previously signaled by a Marjorie Taylor Green fact-finding hearing that resembled nothing more than a HUAC trial from the darkest days of McCarthyism, the Klepto Kaiser finally snapped and is attempting to defund PBS and NPR for the high crime of broadcasting "woke ideology" - which at this point clearly means anything Trump and other rich white nazis don't like.

arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20

Trump demands defunding of PBS and NPR over “woke propaganda”

"President Donald Trump escalated his attack on NPR and PBS on Thursday when he signed an executive order demanding the end of all federal funding supporting the news outlets.

In his order, Trump claimed that unlike in the 1960s, when the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) was funded to ensure Americans had access to critical news, there are plenty of news options today. He has joined other Republicans accusing NPR and PBS of promoting a left-leaning bias. In a White House statement, he ordered any agency directly or indirectly funding the outlets' allegedly "woke propaganda" to "end the madness" as soon as possible, cutting off current funding "to the maximum extent allowed by law" and declining "to provide future funding."

There's a lot to unpack here; while I may not always ideologically agree with the folks at Ars, they do still produce deep longform investigative dives into the stories they cover - a rarity in the modern media environment. Firstly, no Trump probably can't legally do this, and yes he's just yolo-ing it out into the world anyway; also, it's Friday. As the article notes, it's unclear how Trump can order the CPB to cut already-approved funding for the next two years, and we haven't even gotten into how the "whys" Trump wants to do this all violate free speech and freedom of the press rights. This is petulant manbaby dictator shit.

Additionally, it's not at all clear that Trump's illegal tantrum is going to meaningfully affect his targets, NPR and PBS, anyway. Only 1% of NPR's funding actually comes from the US government, and PBS only receives 15% of its funding from the CPB. Since Der Führer has not yet granted himself the authority to simply throw members of the media in jail for expressing opinions and criticisms he doesn't like, the funding cut is as far as he can go for now. Unfortunately however, Trump's tantrum will definitely have victims and impoverish an already appalling American media environment; particularly in rural communities where smaller stations can rely on the CPB for as much as 50% of their funding.

"Cutting off funding, Kreger said last month, would have a "devastating impact" on rural communities, especially in parts of the country where NPR and PBS still serve as "the only source of news and emergency broadcasts," NPR reported.

For example, Ed Ulman, CEO of Alaska Public Media, testified to Congress last month that his stations "provide potentially life-saving warnings and alerts that are crucial for Alaskans who face threats ranging from extreme weather to earthquakes, landslides, and even volcanoes." Some of the smallest rural stations sometimes rely on CPB for about 50 percent of their funding, NPR reported."

All of which leaves us with the "whys" which really don't require us to read many tea leaves before we find the fascist ideological policing and reactionary bullshit. Downmarket Mussolini more or less just said the quiet part out loud:

"While Trump opposes NPR and PBS for promoting content that he disagrees with—criticizing segments on white privilege, gender identity, reparations, "fat phobia," and abortion—the networks have defended their programming as unbiased and falling in line with Federal Communications Commission guidelines."

I confess that on some level it's probably amusing to picture Trump sitting in front of a TV and getting big mad when it tells him Black and trans people exist, he shouldn't bully overweight people, and the abortion bans he facilitated are hurting American women. The reality here however is that in signaling what the president doesn't want to see in publicly-funded media, he's effectively articulating a Christian Nationalist agenda. As we've discussed numerous times on this blog, the regime is not just fighting a material war to install a fascist dictatorship in our society; they're also fighting an authoritarian cultural war on our discourse, our history, and who is allowed to matter in our media entertainment complex. The ideological war Trump is trying to use state power to enforce here, is just as important to the Trumpenrich project to create a white ethnostate dictatorship under the Kelpto Kaiser, as its material expansion of the American fascist police state is.

Trump's recent executive order to "unleash" police in America is actually a paint-by-numbers recipe for an authoritarian police state operating under a perpetual condition of martial law; and given the Swine Emperor's history, that should alarm Americans more than their media is letting on.

Nina-Bytes: A Road to Martial Law

ninaillingworth.com/2025/05/02

"Even if we didn’t know Trump is an unhinged fascist with a penchant for punitive violence, the combination of material state support for police criminality, arming up and training to occupy American communities, and the unification of military, police, and national security assets, including personnel apparently, into a single ad-hoc domestic security force would all be ominous signs of an impending dictatorship under martial law. If I’m being honest I don’t think the author of this piece is being alarmist enough given the scope of this executive order."

After Charlottesville in 2017, I wrote an essay correctly predicting much of Trump's final six months in office and the coup attempt he'd launch after losing the 2020 election. Although I didn't discuss whether or not I thought that coup attempt would succeed at that time because I was more interested in stopping it in advance, I did theorize that as long as the US military stayed out of the equation, Downmarket Mussolini could make a passable attempt to retain power and govern as a dictator through some combination of police forces, ICE, the Insurrection Act, some percentage of state National Guard units, and martial law. Naturally then, I was very concerned when Trump spent the final portion of his first term courting that exact coalition and telling anyone who would listen that he wouldn't accept any election he lost. In the long run however Trump's coup failed because he didn't lock down the security forces he needed to actually complete and enforce the coup; like a lot of things Der Leader does, he tried to bullshit his way over the finish line with a half-baked autogolpe and the whole thing flopped.

Given all that, I must confess that Trump's latest executive order further empowering and militarizing American police forces while integrating their training and operational structures with the military and the Department of Homeland Security, is triggering alarm bells loud enough to shake every fiber of my being right now.

archive.ph/WLyOo

Trump’s Newest Executive Order “Unleashes” the Cops—and Flirts With Martial Law

"Now, Donald Trump has issued an executive order that will make it even harder to hold cops accountable—and flirts blatantly with martial law. Named the dystopian “Strengthening and Unleashing America’s Law Enforcement to Pursue Criminals and Protect Innocent Citizens,” this new order purports to “unleash high-impact local police forces; protect and defend law enforcement officers wrongly accused and abused by State or local officials; and surge resources to officers in need.”

The aggressive language in the order could be cribbed from any military police state in the annals of history, and that’s clearly the kind of polity that Trump would like to create and lead. The order instructs the secretary of defense to put down the bottle long enough to “determine how military and national security assets, training, non-lethal capabilities, and personnel can most effectively be utilized to prevent crime.” It also instructs the Department of Homeland Security to “advance the objectives of this order.”

Careful readers will note that this sounds an awful lot like the prelude to martial law, a framework where national military assets are deployed in American cities to enforce the president’s priorities. That would, of course, be a violation of the Posse Comitatus Act, which prevents the president from using the American military as a domestic police force. But I think it’s well established that Trump has never watched The West Wing and doesn’t respect the rule of law in this country anyway."

If I'm being honest I don't think Elie Mystal, is being alarmist *enough* given the scope of this executive order. If you were purposely trying to create a fascist police state under a perpetual enforcement of martial law, this is the exact kind of policy you'd enact. Democratic countries, even faux-democratic liberal capitalist "democracies," separate law enforcement, counterterrorism, and military forces for a reason; dictators around the world rely on a full state oppression apparatus precisely because you can't control a fascist police state without controlling the entire security apparatus of that state, and integrating them the way Trump is trying to do here facilitates that unification and full state oppression structure. Although Mystal doesn't mention it, I challenge any reasonable person to figure out a good reason to provide military training and Homeland Security support to American police forces unless you're planning on treating them like an occupying army.

All of which is still ignoring the obvious authoritarian objectives Mystal does discuss. This executive order does make it borderline impossible to hold police, an already protected class in our society, criminally accountable for their actions; in fact it ensures they won't even be charged by instructing the Department of Justice to go after officials who try to prosecute police. This order *will* also further militarize US police forces that already look like the Army occupying Iraq due to prior initiatives to provide murderpigs with military gear through the DoD. Finally, I think Mystal is correct to connect Trump's promise of pro-bono legal aid to cops who break the law, with the regime's efforts to secure nearly a billion dollars worth of promised pro-bono work from bigtime DC Law firms who sold their soul to Trump out of cowardice and greed.

The Skinny: More Nixonian Than Nixon

“Mainstream analysts have been either unable, or unwilling to actively separate whether or not Downmarket Mussolini “can” do something, from whether or not he “should” do something. This isn’t a videogame; emergency presidential powers presupposes an actual emergency that justifies them or Trump is just stealing power for the executive branch and the media has a responsibility to report that because it’s part of the story. Yes, the President has the authority to declare a bunch of national emergencies, but that doesn’t mean we have to believe him when he makes up a bunch of fake crises and then insists that those fake crises give him the power to literally do fascism.”

We warned America about the Patriot Act, Bush's unconstitutional surveillance, NSA's global panopticon, and illegal data gathering from Bush to Trump. After threatening to target the media several hundred times since he first announced his candidacy for President, Trump is now instructing his bootlicking Attorney General Pam Bondi to make his war on journalists possible. Although Bondi is acting in the context of hunting down leakers in the Department of Defense, the reality is that Downmarket Mussolini will almost certainly come for his critics in the media and the sources they speak to, next.

commondreams.org/news/bondi-jo

Bondi Shreds Biden-Era Protections for Journalists as Trump White House Hunts Leakers

"As part of a renewed crackdown on leaks, Bondi said she is issuing revised Justice Department regulations stating that media outlets "must answer subpoenas" related to efforts to uncover sources of unauthorized disclosures within the federal government.

"The policy contemplates the use of subpoenas, court orders, and search warrants to compel production of information and testimony by and relating to members of the news media, subject to the Privacy Protection Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000aa, and the approval of the department's leadership in some instances," the memo states. "The attorney general must also approve efforts to question or arrest members of the news media."

As I alluded to above, I find US corporate media's bloodless, minutiae-focused reporting on Bondi's actions here curious and alarming given that the Trump regime is giving itself the power to come after them and their journalists. Obviously the regime is acting in response to the embarrassing leaks surrounding Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and the investigation DNI Tulsi Gabbard is conducting into those leaks. None of this is happening in a vacuum however, and I don't know who it serves to report only in the narrow context of the regime's narrative here.

Like let's cut the crap right? During his first administration, Trump's Department of Justice already tried to go after reporters to expose their sources. Trump is a guy who threatened journalists with implied carceral sexual assault if they didn't give up their sources, on the campaign trail. The Kelpto Kaiser has literally said negative reporting about himself and his regime should be "illegal." The regime is weaponizing the FCC and holding McCarthy-esque hearings lead by fascist conspiracy crank-turned Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene to target NPR and PBS for criticizing Trump and admitting LGBTQ people exist in American life. Trump is literally exerting so much pressure on CBS over the editing on a 60 Minutes segment featuring Kamala Harris (a woman he already beat in the 2024 US election) that the program's longtime editor resigned because the show's independence was compromised.

I honestly couldn't give a rats ass about warmongers working for a fascist regime who get caught leaking, but surely it doesn't take a psychic to realize that the would-be dictator already targeting media that criticizes or opposes his fascist agenda, is going to use new Department of Justice guidelines that let him more freely target media that criticize or oppose his fascist agenda, to further target media that criticizes or opposes his fascist agenda. This isn't rocket science here. For corporate media outlets to pretend this story is purely about internal leaks inside Pete Hegseth's staff strains credulity, and would appear to be very shortsighted indeed.

"The law enforcement arm of the U.S. Postal Service has quietly begun cooperating with federal immigration officials to locate people suspected of being in the country illegally, according to two people familiar with the matter and documents obtained by The Washington Post — dramatically broadening the scope of the Trump administration’s government-wide mass deportation campaign.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, a little-known police and investigative force for the mail agency, recently joined a Department of Homeland Security task force geared toward finding, detaining and deporting undocumented immigrants, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of professional reprisals.

Immigration officials are seeking photographs of the outside of envelopes and packages — an Inspection Service program known as “mail covers” — and access to the postal investigation agency’s broad surveillance systems, including Postal Service online account data, package- and mail-tracking information, credit card data and financial material and IP addresses, the people said."

Hey, someone finally worked up the courage to ask Downmarket Mussolini a real question. In a contentious ABC interview Trump openly admitted what we all know but much of our media and political establishment is pretending was in question; the Klepto Kaiser *can* get Kilmar Abrego Garcia back from a torture prison in El Salvador with a mere phone call, he just doesn't want to and he's hiding behind his lawyers to get away with trafficking an innocent man to a foreign concentration camp.

archive.ph/Q8lQT

Trump’s Tirade at Reporter Wrecks His Own Case Against Abrego Garcia

"In the interview, ABC News’s Terry Moran pointed out that Trump has the power to pick up the phone, call El Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele, and with the “power of the presidency” get Bukele to release him.

“I could,” Trump replied. “If he were the gentleman that you say he is, I would do that.”

At the most basic level, this destroys one of the Trump administration’s central arguments for leaving Abrego Garcia to rot in an El Salvadoran gulag. Administration officials say they have no power to compel Bukele to release him, because it would intrude on Salvadoran sovereignty to dictate that country’s treatment of one of its own.

But Trump just admitted that if he called Bukele and asked him to do this, his fellow dictator would in fact comply. This wrecks the fake distinction upon which Trump has hung his whole argument—the one between compelling Bukele to release Abrego Garcia and merely requesting that Bukele do so."

I've never been a fan of Sargent's writing either, so I'll save you the click through - as the author notes Trump also said a number of other very revealing things when the ABC reporter went in harder:

- when Moran pointed out that Trump's own answer meant he was violating a Supreme Court Order, Der Leader shifted the blame to his lawyers. As Sargent points out, this isn't an adequate answer because that means either Trump's lawyers are running the country, or he's *knowingly* violating multiple court orders.

- when pressed on the government's argument that Garcia is an MS-13 gang member, Trump said that the Maryland man had "MS-13" tattooed across his knuckles. As the reporter pointed out, Garcia does not; he has a leaf, a smiley face, a cross. and a skull, which the government labeled as meaning "MS-13" in a photo Trump himself displayed for news cameras, despite the fact that experts who study the gang have never seen those symbols associated with MS 13.

- after Moran told Trump the government had digitally altered the picture of Garcia's hand tattoos, Der Leader tossed his spaghetti. In an exchange that I think says a lot about how Trump sees the media's role in covering his presidency, the president snapped "Terry, they're giving you the big break of a lifetime. I picked you. But you're not being very nice."

I don't think it's time to break out the commemorative "All the President's Men" glasses just yet, but it is nice to see a mainstream corporate media outlet get into the weeds a little bit when Trump is openly lying into a camera, and you can definitely see why the White House is trying to stack the press pool full of Fox reporters, Newsmax hosts, and fascist Youtubers. Unravelling the regime's enforced unreality and governance by conspiracy theory is frightfully easy if you get to ask Trump any follow up questions.

In terms of the substance of what Trump said however, yeah I think he just hung himself on camera; for whatever that's even worth given the lawless behavior of the Trumpenreich regime. Trump could bring Garcia back, he just doesn't want to because he says Garcia is a "gang member" even though the government hasn't proven that, and won't ever be able to prove that in court.

"The evidence for Abrego Garcia’s alleged MS-13 ties is extremely thin. It’s largely based on the testimony of a Maryland cop who was suspended soon after and indicted for serious professional misconduct involving the sharing of confidential information with a sex worker. He pleaded guilty and was removed from the force.

The MS-13 claim isn’t just a vile smear. The idea that Abrego Garcia poses a severe public safety threat is the foundation for the administration’s entire rationale for not bringing him back and attempting to remove him again via lawful channels. Note that Trump suggested to Moran that if Abrego Garcia were not a gang member, Trump would bring him back.

So the administration should have to answer for the fact that the whole basis for not doing so is largely the finding of one disgraced cop. Yet neither Trump nor any senior administration officials have ever been questioned on this point."

Yes.

If the first 100 days of the Trump 2.0 era have taught us nothing else, it's that DHS, ICE, and the Migrant Carceral Complex, all built by bipartisan hands, represent the tools to create a turnkey dictatorship for any president willing to seize them; and thus they should all go.

Nina-Bytes: Sowing and Reaping in Trump’s America

"The reality is that a police state and vast carceral complex built to target migrants, can just as easily be repurposed by a fascist government to target the regime’s political opposition. Either we make our stand against fascism here, on the issue of immigration justice, or the rest of us will surely fall under that same machinery of oppression in due time. Both the Department of Homeland Security and ICE were built under false pretenses by governments who were violating our civil rights; they are “solutions” in search of a problem, and under Trump anyone who opposes fascism has become that problem."

Media sources have obtained a March 14th Department of Justice memo the Trump regime released after a FOIA request, revealing that the Pork Reich wants ICE agents to ignore the Fourth Amendment to fight a fake war against "narco-terrorist gangs." If they get away with this, we'll truly be in the V for Vendetta era of Trumpism.

Nina-Bytes: Jackboots at the Door

ninaillingworth.com/2025/04/29

"As someone who has spent many years studying fascism, authoritarianism, and police states however, I’m pretty sure you don’t issue a Department of Justice order like that unless you intend to use ICE to start going house to house in American communities; and once a fascist government grants itself the power to do that, it really doesn’t matter why they claim they’re doing so anymore. This is quite literally the beginnings of the dystopian police state winger prepper reactionaries are always going on about guarding against, and in anything resembling a functioning democracy US Attorney General Pam Bondi would be arrested immediately for even signing it. As both the article and your middle school civics class will tell you, absolutely none of this is legal no matter what ancient laws Trump tries to invoke and Bondi’s Justice Department is basically telling ICE to ignore the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution, “because we say so.”
