💻 Hello Old Friend, Talos II 💻
This was my first IBM POWER9 system, acquired in 2020 and built for home/desk use. Dual socket SMT4 Sforza, 144 threads, 256-512GB RAM, various storage/net/accelerators over the years. [1]
As expected, I fell in love and acquired four IBM Power System L922-2U [2], which are presently in the colo awaiting network rebuild (remote hands this time).
The Talos II has served a variety of purposes, with most of its time running FreeBSD PPC64le (&a bit of PPC64be for fun). Sometimes also Linux, back when I was tearing into qemu code for compiler optimization hypothesis testing, RTX GPU passthrough, +validating assumptions about qemu on P9/le handling amd64 & arm64 emulation.
So, out of storage! Into the rack! New user accounts! But first it needs updated OS drives (the 3x 64GB SATADOM in Raid-Z1 need to be repurposed), and a NIC (25G-DP CX-5 or X710-DA4).

For now, #QEMU supports only 3 #CPU architectures ( #AMD, #IBM #POWER9 #POWER10 and IBM #S390x), for Intel and other(?) architectures, support doesn't exist yet - one can find it in QEMU #documentation about Confidential Guest Support https://stackoverflow.com/a/79195057/499698
Does a power9 based sbc exist ?
@landley @dalias @stman that makes sense...
#SPARCv9 / #sparc64 - like #Power9(+) / #ppc64 - aren't per-se bad and a lot of it is used in #CriticalInfrastructure systems like the BAE #Rad750 & #esa #LEON...
Not to mention the fact that they - alongside #RISCv - are the only fully opensourced #ISAs with sufficient powerful designes fit for use cases beyond #IoT-Sensors and other "edge (embedded) computing" applications...
I've not gotten myself over to subscribing the #LKML since the amount of traffic there is just extreme...
But I'd love to see more supported architectures I can port @OS1337 to, and I'd ideally prioritize those long-term that have solid toolchain / compiler / userland support as I don't want to change any upstream code if possible and stick with fixed releases so that even decades later someone can rebuild such a system from scratch if need be...

#darktable runs on my #power9 machine natively now! woohoo!
Checking on shipments before starting the workday to see if the newly acquired (fourth) LC922 is transiting to the colo… and yes, it's true #iLoveIBM!
Still pending OS storage decisions before supply chain:
- remain standardized on dual S4510 / PM863a
- alt standard w/ dual SATADOM for EFI boot handoff to dual NVMe
- introduced new standard of dual 2TB P3608 Optanes
- disregard OS drives and use iSCSI boot
- other ideas… 🙇🏼♀️
Using #guix to fix an upstream package issue

Inventory day! Spreadsheets! :ablobfoxbongo: :blobfoxupsidedowndizzy:
Sometimes my #homelab equipment gets out of hand and needs to be sorted. Surely these boxes haven't been around my desk for maybe two weeks? Surely not.👩💻
Looking forward to #holiday time off to rest a restless busy brain, wrap up the NanoPi.cloud #embedded cluster project, get those three #POWER9 systems online!, and maybe spend a bit less time staring off into the void at too-early hours of every morning. :heart_cyber:
Why does #Firefox support #DRM only on Windows, Apple(?) and #Linux
(X86)?
Has it to pay any kind of royalties to include this ugly functionality on the browser?
How can end users getting it available other architectures and operative systems not yet supported?
Thanks! :flan_shrug:

"A recent patch to glibc6 to add #POWER9 VSX strncpy was a whopping 250 hand-crafted assembly instructions, where its equivalent using Cray Vector principles is around 14."

This reminds me of that #MillComputing talk about how they automatically parallelize strlen.

Innocent old me. It’s been years since I have even thought about /etc/X11/xorg.conf and I thought I never would have to again. Wrong.
Today I updated Fedora Linux on my PPC workstation and on reboot, I had lost my GUI login. That turned out to be because the systemd gdm.service had failed, because the X server had failed, because… well, because it had no conf file.
These days you’re not supposed to need one (it’s meant to auto-detect stuff during boot) but after the updates, this install needed one.
I generated one with the Xorg command, and while that command errored out, it seemed to generate a complete-looking config file. With fingers crossed I dropped it into place and rebooted and it Just Worked[tm].
Not a fun thing to debug, but I am glad to have solved it.

@orowith2os yeah, I might. My issue is a known bug, I commented on the relevant github issue.
Being on the #POWER9 architecture does slow things down a bit as there are fewer people using that. (not to mention #guix which insists on reproduceable builds which is another delaying factor)
@ted_dunning @profoundlynerdy @Houl the only.asvantage is that #SPARCv9 & #POWER9 are #FLOSS'd like #RISCV so the limiting factor would be economies of scale and the ability to procure fabbing, which sadly isn't #FLOSS'd yet ( #LibreSilicon works on that!)...
This literally bit #Russia in the rear as #TSMC canceled any deliveries for #MCST's chips they fabbed on 28nm nodes...
🌘 現代CPU有一個幕後演員陣容
➤ 揭開x86 CPU的真正開機過程
https://www.devever.net/~hl/backstage-cast
