🌍🌏 Great Tit (Parus major)

The Great Tit is a large member of the Tit, Chickadee, and Titmice family, sporting a deep blue-black head, white cheeks, olive-green back, and bright yellow underparts with a black central stripe. It is widespread across Europe and Asia, thriving in woodlands, parks, and gardens. The Great Tit is an active, adaptable, and bold bird, known for its resourceful foraging, dominance at feeders, and loud, distinctive 'teacher-teacher' song, especially during the breeding season. Fun fact: Highly intelligent birds, Great Tits learned to open the foil caps on traditional glass milk bottles delivered to doorsteps to steal the cream, a behavior that spread rapidly in the mid-20th century.

Local woodland Walkmill has been massively rejuvenated with new accessible paths, footbridges and many benches.

Nice spot has bench opposite bird feeding spot, great for getting shots of the locals.

The Familiar Face of Nature – Great Tits in the Park

This morning, I spent some quiet time in one of Tilburg’s city parks photographing a few Parus major — the great tit, or koolmees in Dutch. These charming little birds hold a special place in my heart. Every spring, a family of great tits nests in my own garden. Watching them raise their young year after year has become a rhythm I cherish deeply.

Today, I brought my Canon 5D Mark III and the Sigma 100–400mm lens. The birds were lively and alert, hopping between branches and calling to one another — always aware, always in motion. Sadly, a shift in the weather cut my visit short, but not before I captured a few peaceful moments.

Great tits are not only beautiful — with their yellow bellies and bold black stripes — but also remarkably adaptive. They’re one of Europe’s most studied songbirds, known for their intelligence and ability to thrive in both woodlands and urban settings.

Sometimes the most meaningful encounters aren’t with rare or exotic species, but with the ones that choose to live alongside us.

📝 I had already taken some pictures of great tits and chaffinches. That's why I was looking for a special background. I noticed this incidence of light on a young tree. So I pointed the camera there and waited for a bird to land. At first, the birds always landed facing the wrong way, but after a long wait, they finally landed in the right position. This is a photo of it.
ℹ️ The Great Tit (Parus major) belongs to the family of tits and is the most common tit in Europe. It grows up to 15 cm tall, has a wingspan of up to 23 cm and has a very varied diet (e.g. insects, larvae, nuts). Male great tits have a continuous black stripe on their belly and neck. 📝 Ich hatte schon einige Bilder von Kohlmeisen und Buchfinken geknipst. Deswegen habe ich nach einen besonderen Hintergrund gesucht. Mir ist da dieser Lichteinfall mit einem jungen Baum aufgefallen. Also habe ich die Kamera dahin ausgerichtet und gewartet, bis ein Vogel dort landet. Erst sind die Vögel immer mit der falschen Blickrichtung gelandet, aber nach langen warten auch mal in passender Position. Das ist ein Foto davon.

Sie wird bis zu 15 cm groß hat eine Spannweite von bis zu 23 cm und ernährt sich sehr vielseitig (z.B. Insekten, Larven, Nussfrüchte). Männliche Kohlmeisen haben einen durchgehenden schwarzen Streifen am Bauch und am Hals. Bei Weibchen sind diese unterbrochen.
