How does plant based meat compare in taste with regular meat. NECTAR, a nonprofit initiative working to accelerate the alternative protein transition, conducts an annual "Taste of the Industry" sensory analysis of plant-based meats within the US. You can find the one page summary here.
Scientists have developed a sustainable, non-GMO "vegan meat" from sunflower protein that is not only packed with essential minerals like iron and zinc, but also has a mild flavor and fibrous texture that makes it a perfect meat substitute. When can I buy it? 😋

It's nice to read a hopeful essay about the future of #PlantBasedMeat. 🌱 And the author is right: It's a marathon, not a sprint.

"Why do vegans have foods that look like meat?"
Wrong question! The right question is:
"Why do meat eaters change their food so it doesn't look like an animal?"

On plant based meat.
For those of us that eat meat, there's really nothing like a good hamburger with an 80/20 ground beef patty and a great brioche bun. A good grind of beef and a good bun are really all that's needed to make a satisfying hamburger. The extra ingredients are enjoyable, incidental, and not always needed, at least in my opinion.
Today I had an Impossible burger. Something that I have periodically. And, I enjoyed it. It has a good flavor, nice mouth feel, and is satisfying.
But I don't think that it should be measured against a beef-based burger. Similarly, a beef-based burger should not be compared with a patty made from pork, turkey, or chicken. They are all a different sandwich.
So, we should embrace that there are good meat alternates available that have numerous benefits when compared to meat, even, as in my case, when the alternate is only periodic.

Since a cow follows a vegetarian diet really, isn't beef #plantbasedmeat in some kind of way?
In other news, another manufacturer of processed #vegan #food launches spare ribs with edible bones.
Serious question: If you do not want to kill and eat animals, why does your food have to look like bits of a corpse?

[Commentary] It will be easier to persuade people to avoid meat from animals if they can eat meat and other animal products that taste like those they know but do not require raising animals. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/opinion/2023/07/21/commentary/world-commentary/plant-based-meat/?utm_content=buffer4adec&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn #opinion #commentary #food #agriculture #animals #diet #plantbasedmeat
#ImpossibleFoods has released a new product, in late June: The Indulgent Burger, which actually has more fat than its previous products, aimed at better recreating the taste and mouthfeel of #meat
If successful, this will mean more demand for fatty oils. In fact, the third ingredient on its list is #coconut oil, primarily from #Indonesia & the #Philippines
My piece, for @Vox published last month, explores the risks this presents for the future of #plantbasedmeat.
Happy 20th of #DecemBird!
This takes a little work to make, but it's an brilliant replacement. Is there ANY animal-flesh dish that can't be reproduced using only plant-based ingredients?
