Today in Labor History July 17, 1913: Seattle’s Potlatch Riots began, when soldiers and sailors brawled with members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) during Seattle’s Potlatch Festival. Alden Blethen, publisher of the "Seattle Times," who hated free speech and feared "radical elements," had been fanning the flames of reaction against the IWW and local activists. He was highly critical of liberal Mayor Cotterill for allowing IWW organizers and anarchists to speak publicly in downtown Seattle. His red-baiting led to violence, as soldiers and sailors ransacked IWW and Socialist headquarters. The riots, which followed were essentially an attempt to suppress free speech and labor organizing, and were a harbinger of the nationwide red scare leading up to and following World War I. In response to the riots, Mayor Cotterill declared an emergency, took control of the police, shut down saloons, banned street speaking and attempted to temporarily shut down the Times.

On CBC Music's "Saturday Afternoon at the Opera," host Marion Newman played a wax-cylinder recording a relative had made at a Potlatch, back when the ceremony was banned in Canada.

I wasn't aware of that history so I had to look it up. Learned something new.

"Historically, the Potlatch functioned to redistribute wealth in what some refer to as a gift-giving ceremony. …

"As part of a policy of assimilation, the federal government banned the Potlatch from 1884 to 1951 in an amendment to the Indian Act (see Potlatch Ban). The government and its supporters saw the ceremony as anti-Christian, reckless and wasteful of personal property. They failed to understand the Potlatch’s importance as well as its communal economic exchange value."

Potlatch in Villa Occupata

Dove? in Villa Occupata a Milano, via Litta Modignani 66

Quando? Sabato 21 dicembre dalle 19

#PacificSilverweed is abundant throughout #PNW into Alaska & Arctic. Longtime important #FoodSource for #PacificNorthwest #Indigenous peoples. In BC, patches of them were protected under #potlatch #FirstNations family law.

You can note patch locations when flowers appear & then dig up roots in late Fall & Winter. The roots taste like bitter sweet potatoes.

Pacific silverweed, growing out of rocks. Green leaves, tubular running stalks & small yellow saucer shaped flower.

City has been continuing its oppression at BLMG🌺. We were selectively swept out of the park last night and expect more displacement tonight. Join us in resistance! Grill at 10. Beans and rice will be plentiful! Bring a dish to share!
At park close, help move mutual aid infrastructure and document our ongoing opposition to the criminalization of survival if/when we're asked to move along. 🔥

PROPOSAL: A 21st Century .

We the people should respond to the enormous disparity of wealth with a 21st Century Potlatch.

The world should challenge mega-millionaires and billionaires to give away 97% of their wealth back to the rest of the world.

No one needs millions or billions of dollars to live. So they should demonstrate this truth by giving back that money to the people of Earth.
