Excitatory input from #PrefrontalCortex to #hippocampus pyramidal cells is believed to be mediated through the thalamic nucleus reuniens. @mick &co show in rodents that this brain pathway is unexpectedly minor, contrary to assumptions in the field
@PLOSBiology plos.io/48u6mle

Monosynaptic retrograde tracing from hippocampus proper shows no cells originating from nucleus reuniens (NRe), unless the starter cells are present in subiculum region. Left: Injection site for dorsal CA1 and viral spreads for the helper virus (green cells). B and D, Injection site of a dCA1 injection: green cells contain helper virus and red cells are pseudotyped rabies virus positive and starter cells (yellow) shown closer on the inset, shown by arrowheads. C and E, No cells found in any thalamic section containing NRe.

What role does #myelination play in #PrefrontalCortex development? This study shows that juvenile #demyelination disrupts PV #interneuron firing & self-inhibition, revealing a developmental window where myelination is essential for long-term cortical function @PLOSBiology plos.io/4mI4lVO

Left: An example image of a filled PV interneuron showing putative autapses with white arrows. Note that all autapses are present in close distance to the soma. Right: Pie charts depicting the percentage of cells showing (1) both structural and physiological autapses, (2) no structural nor physiological autapses, and (3) only structural autapses. Note that only mice that underwent juvenile demyelination have PV interneurons which show structural autapses but no autaptic response.

Something I always wondered about people with and :

We're almost always empaths.

The part of our brain - the - responsible for is slightly larger than usual while the part of our brain in our regulating motor planning/control, has faulty neuro-pathways and shrunken parts.

More connections to the PFC as an adaptation, resulting in glitchy motor controls but perhaps very deep emotions.

Lateral #PrefrontalCortex is involved in executive functions, but what roles do distinct anatomical subregions play? This study shows that caudal VLPF specializes in visual input processing, while middle areas support context-based behavioral planning @PLOSBiology plos.io/4ljEz9W

What role do cortical regions play in #mathematical learning? This study reveals the causal role of dorsolateral #PrefrontalCortex & #frontoparietal network in #math learning using #transcranial neuromodulation in human participants @PLOSBiology plos.io/45SyMUI

Top left: Calculation problems (denoted by “§”) began with the presentation of a problem, a brief mask, and an unlimited input duration. Upon giving the correct response, the participant was presented with a new problem. Incorrect responses led to the repetition of the same problem until the correct response was provided. Bottom left: Drill problems (denoted by “♯”) were presented as a combination of two operands and an outcome. In contrast to the calculation problems, in the drill problems, the underlying algorithm to derive the result by calculation was not known. The combination had to be memorized and reproduced after masking. Both presentation time and response input time decreased from one session to the next, overall. Problems were repeated when answered incorrectly. Right: A 3D volume, generated manually in CONN, depicting the four frontoparietal seeds (left dlPFC, right dlPFC, left PPC, right PPC) as well as the right and left frontoparietal connectivity that was used in the functional connectivity analyses.

The medial #PrefrontalCortex (mPFC) is a key brain area for pain sensation & #ChronicPain. This study shows that modulation of a circuit projecting from nucleus reuniens of the thalamus to mPFC improves neural & behavioral indicators of chronic pain in mice @PLOSBiology plos.io/4mpMuEj

RE neurons respond to pain-like stimuli, emotional changes, and social interaction in SNI mice. Top: Diagram of virus injection (left) and an example image (right) of GCaMP6s expression in the RE. Bottom: Heat maps of changes in GCaMP6s and eYFP signals in the RE in response to von Frey filament (vF) stimulation on the injured hind paw in SNI or sham mice.

@mick
Cool stuff, congrats!!
Were there no connections between Nucleus Reuniens and Dentate Gyrus or CA3?

I also wonder what you think of this commentary on Ito et al., 2015, by Blake Porter: blakeporterneuro.com/writing/s 👀

Really interesting preprint from researchers at on characterising activity in shared communication between the and the . I found it particularly intriguing that theta power appeared to decrease subspace dimensions and increase subspace predictability, while theta had much less of an effect. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

Ravens and parrots with brains of 5–20 grams demonstrate cognitive abilities similar to those of great apes, whose brains weigh approximately 400 grams. 😮 An interesting article about why birds can support complex cognition with such small brains + a hypothesis about the minimum neurological requirements for this:
