#QDirStat

in recent days, in my Lappy's Kinoite [but not also in my Tower's Kinoite], two of my important apps, installed as #flatpaks (coz... #immutable #atomic system), have gone bonkers & are unusable... #KeePassXC & #QDirStat. They used to work fine, but now their GUIs don't correctly paint on the screen, have severe flickering of individual elements, & either don't respond to clicks, or respond incorrectly. I dunno, but suspect it might be related to my Lappy being old, with thus old nvidia graphics [cf; Tower does not use nvidia]. Coz i only use Lappy occasionally [as opposed to Tower = daily], i dunno exactly when they went to hell. none of my attempts to troubleshoot, including allowing more & more app Flatpak Permissions for them, helped. so, this morn, exasperated, i decided to stop fighting them, & instead bypass them. i fired up my ArchLinux #Distrobox, then installed both apps in it, confirmed both work correctly, did the distrobox-export dance, uninstalled both those flatpaks, &... huzzah. I love #FOSS ๐Ÿ’Ÿ

The first thing I installed on my desktop from the AUR is qdirstat. This was last night.

@viktor Sorry; can't limit it to merely one.

@cosullivan what kind of features are you looking for?

I'm a bit of a data hoarder (OK... more than a bit :)), but I do have to clean things up from time to time. I do it manually, tracking down old/large files using trusty #du (du -lht and du -lhSr in particular) or #QDirStat (if I want to visualize things). The latter does have some cleaning functionality built-in, but I've never used it and can't comment on that particular functionality... it might be worthwhile for you to check out though.

I just deleted 400.000 empty directories from /tmp/ (which were created over the last few days due to a bug), and thereby freed up several hundred MB on my disk.

The subtle pitfall here is that tools like qdirstat-cache-writer apparently don't take directory size itself into account, even though each empty directory takes up 4 Kb. Which means that "du" and "qdirstat" had very different opinions about the size of /tmp/ - didn't expect that!

@vimja I use
--- code ---
du -h ./ | grep -P '^[0-9\.]+[GT]' > files.txt
--- /code ---
until now. But I dream of something cute & nice like #QDirStat but for the konsole.

#QDirStat is a disk usage viewer.

QDirStat scans specified directories recursively, recording their sizes. Once scanned QDirStat organizes the files into a tree as well as a customizable color coded block diagram. QDirStat can perform a number of customizable clean up actions, including source cleanup, junk file deletion, etc. QDirStat can also be made to ignore/skip specific directories.
