#Sprites above storms over the SE of England captured on our #RaspberyPi #GMN #MeteorCameras in #Oxfordshire 180km away from the storms. Sprites are a type of upper atmospheric #TransientLuminousEvent that occur very high above thunderstorms. We had some lucky cloud gaps giving us a clear sight of them! #TLE #Thunderstorm #UKStorm
It's all a bit "almost, but not quite", isn't it?
#FreeBSD has trouble with more than 4GiB of RAM on the #RaspberyPi 4, and does not even acknowledge the 5 (from 2023) in its doco.
#NetBSD does not support the Raspberry Pi 5 yet, has a 3GiB limit on the 4, and in its doco encourages EFI bootstrap, using a TianoCore port, over a more direct method.
But the Pi bootstrap that loads the EFI firmware doesn't support the EFI partition table, so one has to go back to using the old "MBR" one.
And USB doesn't work because the stock NetBSD build doesn't include pci drivers for the Pi. So one has to re-cross-compile the operating system.
#OpenBSD encourages EFI firmware, too, and has a workaround for the 3GiB DMA problem, but likewise the Pi 5 is alien to its doco.
The hardware vendor points at its own operating system, of course, which hides the details behind opaque tooling and whose doco calls such details "legacy".

Умным домом в наше время уже никого не удивишь, а если говорить об элементах умного дома, то они распространены практически повсеместно, а новые экосистемы появляются с завидной регулярностью. И тут встает вопрос, а как быть обычному рядовому пользователю? Покупать оборудование и быть привязанным к конкретной экосистеме? А если случилось так, что используются элементы нескольких разных производителей/экосистем? Куча приложений в смартфоне для управления всем этим хозяйством выглядит удручающее. Перспектива, при отключении интернета, остаться без управления или вообще неожиданно получить в своем хозяйстве неработающее устройство, которое по каким-то причинам перестали поддерживать в новой версии экосистемы, удручает еще больше. А это я еще не касаюсь вопросов безопасности.

@richpuchalsky @Em0nM4stodon I've used both Xowa and kiwix for offline browsing of #wikipedia . #Kiwix blows #Xowa out of the water for both browsing and searching speed. I have the 109GB 2024 Wikipedia on a #RaspberyPi 5, with an inexpensive, lacklustre-brand SSD as the boot drive/system drive (in a decent, inexpensive SATA-to-USB3 enclosure). The Raspberry Pi doesn't break any sweat with browsing and searching; rather it yawns in boredom. The disk IO is superb.
