A silicon graphics O2 workstation. It's a somewhat squat dark blue device. The front says silicon graphics and O2.

Optical drive and skins swapped. It works. But I haven't reset the root password yet. Also when IRIX comes up it sets the resolution to something my VGA->HDMI adapter at my desk doesn't wanna deal with, so I need to drag out the VGA monitor I was using before to get all that sorted. Can't wait to see what s/w is on this former gubmint computer.

I figured it couldn’t hurt to drop in to HARD OFF on my walk back from the mall.

Wandering through the Junk PC aisle, a double-take, what is that teal beauty on the bottom shelf?

A SiliconGraphics O2? In MY rural Japanese city? How did that get here? The tag showed it had been there for over a week. At $60 I had to give it a home!

Lugging it home in the 31+C heat, squeezing in on the tram and dashing through the rain was a slog but it made it home!

Abeit sgi hals self-inflicted that by removing the reasons to buy their stuff when they switched to #Itanium #CPU|s and #nvidia #GPU|s and not developing #IRIX any further!

#SunMicrosystems at least didn't stall in terms of #Software, but once #Oracle acqured them and started shaking down Sun Technology users for "#IP infringement" and "License Violations" they basically made using anythibg but #Linux a bad choice on #Servers!

Meanwhile #Apple to this day doesn't even halfass #Servers anymore and is constantly giving customers and espechally professionals the middle finger in terms of #Repairability & #Maintainability!

And... #SGI all fail, all day.
1 - The NOS hard drive won't partition. It got the usual stiction whacks, its controller is alive, but it just sits like a brick and gets hot.
2 - My original drive is also bad, which is probably why it wouldn't boot before, not because of the install. It's got sooooo many bad sectors. So many. I had tried rescuing it earlier today and this explains why there were just missing bits all over (like the kernel).
3 - I realized the 50-to-80 pin adapter I have is the wrong business end, so I can't use the ZuluSCSI in the O2 (I can use one in the Indy, so I guess I'll probably be reviving the Indy soon while I wait for...)

So. Here I am having wasted the day trying to make something work. I just ordered a SCSIknife SCA which is essentially a ZuluSCSI with an 80-pin connector.

On the plus side, I know how to boot from CD from the command monitor by heart now.

Man! After dinking around with this drive, it is working and has all my old shiz on it. But it won't boot on this machine, possibly because it was built on an R10K machine. So I'm going to set this drive aside and use a blank one. #SGI O2

@flexion Is there a way to run #IRIX on any other platform then #SGI hardware? I'm asking for a... me. 😃

I would like to build 1:2 scaled replicas of SGI hardware (mostly based on Raspberry Pi) and of course running IRIX on it, or a usable emulation.
