I've just checked the local WiFi networks on my ereader .

I can't work out if the network that I've circled is named in error, or it's deliberate.

It's not a network I've seen before - we don't live near any bars, but I don't know about the ladies.

I want to have a separate #WLAN (by way of #VLAN) for my IoT devices (separate #SSID, too), but my #Wifi APs are not natively VLAN-aware. If I have a managed switch that can tag its ports with different VLAN IDs, can I just connect one set of APs for the IoT WLAN to switch ports with the same VLAN ID and the rest of my devices (including the main home network SSID APs) to the untagged switch ports? My router is VLAN aware.

A hidden #SSID breaks #Wifi neighbourhood watch!

Your router goes dark, forcing others to assume its channel is free (the omitted beacons may be the solely reliance of neighbouring routers).

Result? Collisions, interference, slower speeds for ALL nearby.

Its usage is self-sabotage!

Your connecting devices will still scream the SSID in probes anyway.

Plus if you do not turn the device Wi-fi off when leaving, this will assist draining your device’s battery, rather than the rented router…

You can do better!

Hidden SSIDs undermine privacy and your battery devices lifetime!

Plus you’ll have to type it on every device - error prone and tedious. For what?

A false sense of security? Minimal gain, max annoyance...

If neighbours use hidden SSIDs (and won’t listen):

1- manually set your channel (auto may be blind to hidden nets)
2- monitor interference (packet loss is not your fault or the device’s)
3- check if their ISP enforces channel by “factory settings” (#OUI lookup)

The only benefit of hidden SSIDs is not showing up in casual scans, but:

- Your probes still advertise the SSID
- You annoy nerds who now have to debug channel conflicts
- You scream “I’m hiding something “ (WPA3 incapable? Not using randomized MACs? You hide gold?) <-- interesting target

Stop causing trouble - for yourself and others.

1) wifi to receive only a web #gui , of a program running on a #Raspberrypi, served by the #RaspberryPi running a wifi #hotspot , over http://IP:8000 (IP stands for its #ip address and where Pi has no #WAN access at all and wants none nor needs any)
2) the wired LAN connection would be for normal internet traffic via #WAN

Muss man sich da Gedanken machen - das es bei einem Aufzug ein offenes #WLAN im Aufzug Schacht mit komischen #SSID gibt die dann auf einer Anmeldeseite mit #Chinesischen #Schriftzeichen enden - die APs im Schacht schauten wie die von #Freifunk aus

Und was ist los, wenn die #SSID >32 Zeichen lang ist? Ich dachte die wäre hart auf 32 byte festgelegt?

Wir nutzen zuhause im Haus ein #Mesh #Netzwerk von #Google. Damit sind wir super zufrieden. Jetzt nur mein Problem: Ich möchte diverse Geräte nur im 5Ghz Frequenzbereich betreiben und nicht im 2,4Ghz Bereich. Andere Router stellen ja hierfür eine separate #SSID zur verfügung. Bei Google sollte das automatisch, entsprechender Parameter funktionieren. Hat hier jemand auch Erfahrungen oder sogar Lösungen? Über #gidf komme ich leider auch nicht so recht weiter. Bin ratlos. 😩

I've updated my WiFi SSID to include the "_optout_nomap" suffix for a bit of privacy. The "_optout" part signals to Microsoft that I don't want to be tracked by their Wi-Fi-based positioning system (WPS), while "_nomap" does the same for Apple and Google. It's important to get the order right: "_optout" can be placed anywhere in the SSID, but "_nomap" must always be at the end.
