#Sourcehut

It's been on my mind for a while... I want to (eventually) move away from #GitHub to something like #sourcehut (sr.ht/), #Codeberg (codeberg.org/) or my own self-hosted #Forgejo. It is gonna be painful (with my limited knowledge) but I am determined and believe it will be worth it.

Good article here about the GitHub situation:

Due to changes in #Forgejo that we have recently taken advantage of, #SourceHut is now properly synced and is now up to date! Furthermore, we also accept patches via SourceHut over email (we have this whole time, but now it should be easier), so feel free to send one over! Just make sure they target the audacity-3.7-rebase branch!

I spent some time earlier in the week with my laptop running on #IPv6 only while running some tests.

Very interesting to note which websites are still reachable.

✅ chaos.social
✅ codeberg.org
❌ sr.ht
✅ gitlab.org
❌ github.com
✅ debian.org
❌ abc.net.au
✅ bbc.co.uk

I was surprised that #SourceHut failed, as IPv6 support was added a while back, so I did some digging (literally - I used dig).

sr.ht is missing IPv6 glue records. Important, but easy to overlook if you run your own nameservers.

My git forges accounts:
#radiostudent #gitlab (selfhosted)
KDE gitlab,
#kompot #forgejo (selfhosted)
#codeberg forgejo
#github for work (#giveUpGithub)
#sourcehut (didn't pay but I ❤️ that project )

I had #bitbucket but lost credentials (I don't even miss). There are probably some uknown unknowns as well. Can't w8 for forge federation.

If you read today that #SourceHut is moving to Europe, know that it’s not a new thing. See this blog entry from 2022: sourcehut.org/blog/2022-10-31-

Applicability of Dutch law
We are in the process of moving SourceHut to the European Union, and have incorporated in the Netherlands. Consequently, the terms have been updated to clarify that users are required to comply with Dutch law in addition to US law. The requirement to comply with US law will be removed in a future update after we close the US entity.

This should be how all terms of service changes should be published: lists.sr.ht/~sircmpwn/sr.ht-de

Hey Organizations out there! Look! This is how you provide changes to your terms of services in a simple and good way: https://lists.sr.ht/~sircmpwn/sr.ht-dev/patches/60282 .

Thanks #sourcehut for the great work! ⭐

Seems #sourcehut's static page hosting is suffering, though status.sr.ht says everything is fine.

Thanks to #sourcehut support, who suggested I might have a #fail2ban rule blocking their server and indeed I had. I had such tunnel vision from the blocklist it never occured to me to check...

2025-06-05

Running my own #mailserver and had a momentary issue with SPF when my public IP changed. It seems that got me added to a blocklist, and I stopped receiving emails from #sourcehut and #discourse . I've now been removed from the blocklist, but I haven't received any emails from either of those since. Trying to get them to send me an email results in them not even hitting my server, let alone my inbox.

Anyone experienced similar? #help

Or buy the account at #Sourcehut (as I do).

I moved the last few repos off of GitHub over to Sourcehut. My GitHub is now completely empty.

I moved over my text adventure game engine for Hare and Go lib for doing AF_PACKET sockets and SO_TIMESTAMP measuring.

As I have been looking for a new home for my OSS projects, I've landed on #Sourcehut, an indie developer platform I've been following for some years.

Sourcehut has a lot going for it - 100% open source, funded by members, you don't need an account to open an issue or start a discussion.

I do think the design of the platform is a little too intimidating to be welcoming to non-technical users. I am worried it may put some people off.

Anyone else considering moving off of github? Discuss?

Eh, I just noticed that #gitlab jumped on the AI bandwagon. That's disappointing.
I just want to pay someone to host some private git repos for me, taking care of the security and backups.
I guess I'm moving to #codeberg next. Or possibly #sourcehut?
