This photo shows the Swayambhunath temple complex in Kathmandu, Nepal. The main structure of the monument is a stupa (or chaitya), which is a mound-like structure that contains relics or sacred objects. In this case, the relics are supposed to be parts of Buddha's body and hair.

The complex also has several shrines and temples dedicated to various deities, including the Hindu god Shiva. The site is considered one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

In addition to its religious significance, Swayambhunath is also known for its stunning architecture and beautiful surroundings. The stupa itself is surrounded by a series of terraces, which are adorned with intricate carvings and statues. The site is also home to several other important structures, including the Mahabihar (Great Monastery) and the Changu Narayan temple.

I took this at Swayambhu Mahachaitya (also called the "Monkey Temple") in Kathmandu. Believed to date back to 460 A.D., it was built by King Manadeva, and by the 13th century, it had become an important center of Buddhism.

Source: skyscrapercity.com

Below is the updated information found to date for pagodas, stupas, chortens, and dagabas of 100 feet in height or more. Other terms used for similar structures include “Wat” in Cambodia and “That” in Laos.

Tráș„n Quốc Pagoda in Vietnam- Source: vietnamdiscovery.com

As is depicted by the graphic above, stupas are considered to be the earliest form of such religious structures with Chinese and Japanese pagodas following later in architectural history. Dagaba is a another term used for stupa or pagoda, but most often utilized in Sri Lanka.

At times, differentiating between these structures and temples was difficult. As a general rule, temples were not included in the list, but individual pagodas, et. al. located at temples are included.

As always this is a work in progress and any additions, corrections, or updates are most welcome. Namaste!
