Instead of saying "tech debt" for those things that slow down value delivery, maybe it's time to talk about "overgrown paths".

Longer version: On a bike ride today, I went past some structures in the woods that were the only remnants of a cafe, tea rooms, and a flax mill. In less than 50 years, there is almost no evidence of these buildings and paths because vegetation has taken over.

Opinión candente de ingeniería 🔥 cambia más de 1,200 ABIs de bibliotecas sin incrementar los sonames, ya sea:
a) Locura
b) Genialidad a largo plazo
Voto por (b). El problema Y2K38 necesita solución AHORA, no en 2037 cuando ya es demasiado tarde. A veces, la decisión técnica correcta es la inconveniente.

Best practices aren’t about perfection — they’re about preventing rework. And in IT, rework is expensive. Every shortcut now is a debt you’ll repay with interest later. 💸

Nearly a decade into covering #DevOps, I'm still most fascinated by stories about how organizations approach #appmodernization and addressing #techdebt.

I had the opportunity recently to interview Ben Heil of Paylocity on that topic, and he shared insights into the product updates and development workflows that will help his teams move to #eventdriven #microservices and an #API #designfirst architecture.

We were thrilled to take part in this year’s #XP2025 Conference at FHNW – not just as a sponsor, but as active members of the #Agile community. 🙌

Alongside many inspiring sessions, we ran a short survey at our booth. One key question:

🧠 What’s your biggest challenge in #SoftwareDevelopment?

➡️ Top answer: Technical debt and lack of time for clean-up work.

Resonates with your experience?

Sometimes the best "feature" is removing 1,000 lines of old code. Less code, less complexity.

Automating tasks before a vacation is a great way to reduce your workload and eliminate tech debt. You have to do a handoff anyway. Why not do so with a computer? For more advice on tackling tech debt, join 19 experts and me at the Forbes Tech Council.

A simple currency conversion bug inflated lottery prizes by 10x. It wasn’t just code that broke — execs lost their jobs. Fascinating case of real-world consequences from silent tech debt.

If you think that technical debt is scary, wait until you get to see your sec debt. Don't let the hacker penetrate your doors and locks. Start with continuous threat modeling at copi.owasp.org

reality check:

"Temporary" feature flags that become permanent < Permanent anxiety from cowboy deployments

I'll take manageable code complexity over existential deployment dread any day.

The real technical debt is not having feature flags.
