Technischer Ballast in ML-Systemen erschwert langfristige Wartbarkeit. Verflechtung, instabile Daten, Rückkopplungsschleifen & Co. verursachen versteckte Kosten. Lösungen: bessere Abstraktionen, automatische Tests, Echtzeit-Überwachung. Nachhaltige ML-Systeme brauchen durchdachtes Design und eine Kultur, die Wartbarkeit priorisiert.

This presentation revolves around "Bar Raiser", a tool created by ZipHQ to automatically detect tech debt and catalog it. It looks like it can even automatically fix the easy issues and has a GitHub Checks integration.

Definitely looks like something I'll be checking out after PyCon.

Every “temporary” fix becomes permanent if you don’t revisit it.

Quick hacks feel harmless — in the moment.
But they pile up, fast.

✅ Leave clear TODOs and comments
✅ Track tech debt like real debt
✅ Schedule time to clean up
✅ Fix things before they grow roots

Code ages. Maintain it with intention.

Brand new HP M501dn has TLS 1.0/1.1 enabled, no way to disable.

Update firmware to latest(!) 2021(!) version and now there’s a menu page to turn that off.

Printer came out in 2016, sadly no “use by 2019” date on the package…

Deadlines don’t cause bad code — rushing does.

Shipping fast is important.
But not at the cost of quality.

✅ Plan before you build
✅ Cut scope, not corners
✅ Communicate trade-offs early
✅ Leave space for refactoring

Speed and quality aren’t enemies —
They just need balance.

When the code starts looking like hieroglyphics and your brain feels like a burnt-out circuit board... Trying to push through is a direct line to the land of "Why did I even write this?!" bugs. 😩
Seriously, step away! Give that brilliant brain a break. It's not being lazy, it's being SMART. A little recovery time now saves you hours (and tears) fixing tired-brain disasters later. 🕰️✨

It really looks like the #intern who wrote this code wouldn't have passed a #fizzbuzz with flying colors. The tool should get its configuration from the filesystem, but then it prevents configurability by validating the configuration against a bunch of hard-coded assumptions.

I think the bare minimum for making an intern's experience worthwhile is code reviews from experienced engineers. Having an intern make junk that kinda works is just kicking tech debt down the road.

Read a few articles about the 4chan hack yesterday. I wasn’t really interested in who it happened to. But, how really stuck with me.

No clever exploit. Just tech debt, neglect, and nobody owning anything for years.

I wrote about what this kind of failure says about quality culture and how a lot of teams are closer to it than they think.

Agile Bible, Verse 5:

“Build projects around motivated individuals. Give them the environment and support they need, and trust them to get the job done.”

Now tell me, when every process, idea, stakeholder, task, OKR, strategy, tool, framework, micromanagement, team structure, and team requirement comes top-down…

What exactly are you doing to ensure every individual has the environment and support to deliver their unique value and impact?
(Spoiler: The value and impact is not equal to your role. Shocking, I know.)
