@stefano @elishua I agree, sadly, as much as I love #Xorg and wish it could stay around.

I am, however, watching #Wayback with a keen eye, this seems hopeful from what I understand it to be. (I know it's not quite the same thing!)

The price of software freedom is eternal politics • The Register

The article is about X11 and Wayland but it goes into the politics behind the various projects.

I never considered the ideological divide between "Free Software" vs. "Open Source Software", but I suppose this makes sense.

FOSS stands for Free and Open Source Software, but Free Software and Open Source are not the same things. They are opposites, different sides of the same coin.
Free Software is an expressly left-wing sort of proposition that was formalized in the 1980s. It uses the ambiguous word "free" as in "freedom." It is all about personal liberty, about giving people the right to take someone else's creations, change them however they see fit, and do whatever they want with them, including re-sharing them.
In contrast, Open Source came along over a decade later and is a very much a right-wing capitalist sort of idea – that anyone, including companies, can make better software by developing it in the open. A significant inspiration was the 1997 essay "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" by writer, hacker, and activist Eric S Raymond, and for an idea of his views, note that his personal page advocates for the Libertarian Party, and also his position on firearms control.
The Open Source movement is relatively corporate, and seeks to persuade businesses that developing in the open makes for better software, which, indirectly, makes them more money. The Free Software movement is about ensuring users' rights, including access to the source code, and founder Richard Stallman explicitly says that "Open Source Misses the Point of Free Software."
The term "FOSS" tries to cover both "FS" and "OS", but mingling the two very different terms together risks its advocates forgetting that this handy catch-all acronym masks a profound and important difference of opinion.

Since he was mentioned, here is my obligatory "Richard Stallman is a piece of shit" acknowledgement. The Stallman Report

@debby @Jill_linuxgirl yeah, @ariadne is doing some really good work with that, as there's already #Wayland-only #hardware out and #Wayback fixes the compatibility problem.rather elegantly...

I don't understand the point of Wayback, given that Xwayland already runs fine on various Wayland compositors.

#xorg #x11 #wayland

So, I mentioned before about #12to11 which was an attempt at bringing #wayland to #x11

Well, here is #waylandx which is bringing this project something o a facelift:

github.com/ThomasAdam/waylandx

This is not a project which I was originally involved with though, all I am doing here is sprucing things up...

You should now be able to build this with #meson rather than #xmkmf tooling.

Next up, I need to address the version of the protocols its using, as they're a little out of date.

Given the recent noise about #wayback (lobste.rs/s/9vvhzr/two_weeks_w) this might be a nice alternative.

No matter how stupid it seems.

All #wayback does is run xwayland for you, which when all is said-and-done still won't mean much as you can't run wayland applications under it anyway.

Whereas, #waylandx strives to change that.

It might be intersting to see if you can run waylandx under xwayland.... heh, heh.

If you have any questions let me know. Better yet, open an issue on GH:

github.com/ThomasAdam/waylandx

I've already put some there, if anyone is interested!

I've had a couple of banger predictions about the Linux ecosystem.

Here I am back in 2022 asking if we could do something like #wayback to get away from #x11 faster.

Others include "can we have a generic uring mechanism in the kernel for all I/O?" and "Vulkan will be the norm for pretty much everything once the toolkits are running on top of it."

BTW, I predict that at some point not too far in the future, the Linux kernel will have a 'default largepage' build that makes a lot of THP and Folios complexity go away and increases performance enough that it becomes the norm. It will be like the 32/64 bit thing, but with the 'small page' kernels ending up only for embedded or other low-memory use cases and CHUDs.

A Phoronix Forums post from early 2022 asking if it makes sense to just have legacy X11 sessions happen in a full-screen XWayland.

Yesss! I support Wayback!
This is an awesome project, meant to provide the real answer to the need of something that can take the exact place of X11, while being more modern and compatible with both X11 and Wayland.

I think that #Wayback as a #Xwayland-#shim will allow using #Xorg-only Software on #Wayland-only Hardware without too much headaches.

  • IMHO "Xlibre" is just a shitshow…
