Welland Canal Lock 3 on the Great Lakes St Lawrence Seaway System

Not the planned spectating all day at the U23 World Champs because of weather conditions. A pivot to a little bit of shopping, lunch and then some time spent watching the Captain Henry Jackman go through the locks and down the Canal towards lake Ontario.

Welland, Ontario's Floatfest 2023. One year I need to go in the water. #Floatfest #WellandCanal #WellandOn #SummerFun #RecreationalCanal #Fotomontag #PhotoMonday #photography

There is a rusted train bridge in the background over an abandoned canal. The canal is full of large blow-up floaties like unicorns and flamingos, many large enough to hold a few people. A trail of floaties is visible to the horizon beneath the bridge.

The seldom-used rail bridge used to turn as ships came through the Welland Canal. The building of a bypass means that this is no longer a shipping lane but a recreational canal. #WellandCanal #RecreationalCanal #Welland #Train #Railway #TrainBridge #SilentSunday

A rusted iron bridge with an interesting grid of girders and rivets. In the background, there is water and the centre support of the bridge and further back, the shoreline with weeping willows lining it.

Today in 1900, a dynamite charge causes minor damage on Lock No. 24 of the Welland Canal, causing minor damage.
The men were caught because Euphemia Constable, a girl nearby, saw the bombers before the blast knocked her unconscious.

No Wake. Welland Recreational Canal, Welland, Ontario #Fotomontag #PhotoMonday #photography #UrbanPhotography #WellandCanal #Welland #Ontario

There are many layers to this photo. In the background is a factory water tower which is white and rusted. A treeline is in front of it then a building with an old, red brick look with factory windows and a ladder to the rooftop. A no parking sign is centred in front of it and there is a street lamp to the left. A silver railing is held in place of each side of the bridge roadway by white, cement stanchions. Below the bridge is the canal wall in various cement colours upon which two signs are posted -- Maximum 10 km/hr and NO WAKE Welland Recreational Canal Lands Committee.

Geese and their shadows on the Recreational Canal wall, Welland, Ontario. #SilentSunday #WellandCanal #WellandOn #CanadaGeese #photography #GoldenHour

Two geese walk along the top of a canal wall. The grey wall is stained with white and rusty areas. Behind and to the left of each goose are their shadows on the white wall which is topped with a railing. Bare trees can be seen in the distance.

I found two loons in the Welland Canal this evening. I've seen them in Algonquin Park but this is my first time seeing them in Niagara. #BirdsofMastodon #WellandCanal #Loons #photography #birding

A loon floats on the water which has slight ripples. The loon appears to be looking at the camera with its red eye. The black head and beak are a stark contrast to the patterned back which has a regular pattern of white and there is a white ring around its neck.

The building is beige and shows peeling paint and rust spots. Centred in the photo is a window with 11 panes across and 4 panes down, resembling a crossword puzzle with some light and some dark panes. There is no way to see through the panes due to dirt or something covering the windows. Rust is evident around all of the panes.

“I was hoping to catch the full moon setting but the clouds moved in and only gave me a few minutes with the sun. You can really hear the arrival of spring now, with many new birds arriving daily and the geese building very large flocks.” - photographer Brad Wood

Today the Welland Canal closed for the season. A Canadian self-discharging bulk carrier is the last ship making the journey through the locks, with its destination reported only as "Home to my honey". For the crew onboard, they will soon be reunited with their loved ones! #WellandCanal #Ships #StCatharinesON

A screenshot from the Marine Traffic App with the destination of the Robert S. Pierson reported as "HOME TO MY HONEY", with a speed of 5.8kn. The ship is heading southbound to Port Colborne (Lake Erie) from Port Weller (Lake Ontario). At the time of the screen capture, the ship would have just left lock 2.
