#algalblooms

An action I was recently involved in at the Department for Environment and Water.

Holding a space of mourning for all the sea kin lost to the lethal algal blooms that spread vastly across the South Australian coasts.

Group of demonstrators holding banners and signs with messages such as “CLIMATE CRISIS = OCEAN DEATH”Candles lit in front of pictures showing dead sea animals as a result of the algal blooms. People standing behind holding signs including “ocean kin are dying for climate truth”People kneeling in front of candles and pictures of dead ocean animals. One sign displaying “No Action At What Cost?”

Mass mortality events - A hot and polluted ocean

"It's too much. The ocean can't take it … the ecosystem is teetering on collapse."

"It is the biggest "bloom" in almost a decade...The bloom had been caused by an oversupply of nutrients in the water, from runoff, overfishing, and a natural upwelling in the ocean."

"We need to reduce pollution and other pressures on our rivers and coastal waters to make them as resilient as possible. This would include the reduction in nutrient loads from fish farming, agriculture and sewage."

#Algae May Speed Melting of Antarctic Ice eos.org/articles/newly-discove paper: nature.com/articles/s41467-025

"On the basis of sampling and satellite images, the scientists estimated that #AlgalBlooms covered around 20% of the ice cap’s surface. The newly discovered algal communities may represent one of the largest photosynthetic habitats in #Antarctica... algae can contribute up to around 2% of the total daily melting on the ice cap."

#DomoicAcid can also accumulate in #shellfish & small #fish that feed on the #algae, leading to poisoning in larger #marine animals & humans who consume contaminated #seafood.

Addressing the urgent need to monitor the impact of harmful #AlgalBlooms on #MarineSpecies requires collective strategies. The destructive #California #wildfires, which have contaminated our #oceans & are threatening #MarineLife, serve as a critical call to action for collaborative efforts to protect marine environments….

#Wildfires, including the #EatonFire & #PalisadesFire, have significant repercussions on #marine #ecosystems. The ash & debris from these fires can enter waterways & eventually the #ocean, altering nutrient levels & fostering conditions favorable to the growth of harmful #AlgalBlooms. The #toxic byproducts from these fires can exacerbate #OceanWarming, further promoting the frequency of these toxic blooms. This can lead to increased production of #DomoicAcid.

#DomoicAcid is a potent neurotoxin produced by certain phytoplankton species, which are significant contributors to harmful #AlgalBlooms. These toxins accumulate in the tissues of #MarineMammals & other #wildlife consuming contaminated prey. Recent changes in #ocean conditions,…intensified by #environmental factors such as the #EatonFire & #PalisadesFire, have accelerated the proliferation of these harmful algal blooms.

"Each summer, more and more lake beaches are forced to close due to toxic algae blooms. While climate change is often blamed, new research suggests a more complex story: climate interacts with human activities like agriculture and urban runoff, which funnel excess nutrients into the water".

"Harmful algal blooms, sometimes called HABs, occur when algae grow out of control. Algae are photosynthetic organisms that mostly live in water and rely on the sunlight for energy. Because of climate change, the frequency and intensity of harmful algal blooms are increasing globally. Researchers at Hiroshima University have uncovered new insights into how algae species interact with each other and their environment in coastal waters".

"When populations of tiny aquatic organisms called cyanobacteria (formerly known as blue-green algae) explode, their toxic overgrowth can threaten human drinking water and cause wildlife deaths in events known as harmful algal blooms (HABs). In freshwater environments such as lakes, ponds and streams, a cyanobacterium known as Microcystis aeruginosa is responsible for most toxic harmful algal bloom episodes".

"As harmful algal blooms (HABs) continue to spread across the globe, urgent research is needed to address this growing threat. Studies in Italy, China, and the Atlantic basin have shown that many water bodies have high nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratios, making phosphorus a key factor that drives these blooms. This highlights the critical need for more effective phosphorus management strategies to curb the rise of HABs and protect our ecosystems".

How Cleaning Up Harmful Could Help Fight

"BlueGreen’s method uses hydrogen peroxide to trigger programmed cell death, which results when the bacteria experience oxidative stress.

[However,]
Some substances that kill the algae can cause other kinds of bacteria to grow in the water instead. Others cause the algae to release all of the cyanotoxin within them when they die, poisoning fish and other organisms in the lake.."

While commonly associated with the summer, algal blooms can also persist into the fall. As of late October 2024, blooms were still present along the southern shores of Lake Erie. #algalblooms #greatlakes
