European Bee-eaters are migratory, and Austria is one of the places they come to when they breed. During courtship, the male feeds the larger insects from his catches to the female while eating the small ones himself.

It's been a while since I took my 400mm out for a spin. I finally gave it to Nikon to get it cleaned and serviced yesterday. Can't wait to take pictures with a non-moldy lens haha!

🌍 European bee-eater (Merops apiaster)

The European bee-eater is a richly coloured, slender bird, about 27-29 cm long, with a black beak, brown and yellow upperparts, and green wings. Sexes are similar, though females may have greener shoulders.

They breed in southern and central Europe, northern and southern Africa, and western Asia, preferring open country near sandy banks for nesting. Most populations are migratory, wintering in tropical Africa, but a resident population exists in southern Africa.

Highly gregarious, European bee-eaters nest colonially in self-dug tunnels in sandy banks. They feed and roost communally, often catching insects, especially bees, wasps, and hornets, in flight. The rainbow bee-eater is a strikingly colourful bird, predominantly green with a yellow throat, black eye-stripe, chestnut nape, and a blue rump. Adult males possess elongated central tail feathers. It's widely distributed across Australia, migrating north from southern regions during winter, and also found in eastern Indonesia, New Guinea, and some Pacific islands. These highly social birds are typically seen in small flocks. They hawk insects, especially bees and wasps, on the wing from an exposed perch, and nest colonially in burrows dug into sandy banks or flat ground.

Happy to spot several Blue-throated Bee-Eaters (Merops viridis) perched on a tree and hunting for food near my workplace this morning in Singapore. Saw them taking off to acrobatically grab insects in mid-air.
