This is the #SnowdonMountainRailway (SMR), a narrow-gauge rack-and-pinion #mountain railway, that has been taking passengers from Llanberis to the summit since 1896 (!).

Here are some other facts you might enjoy:
- It's the only public rack-and-pinion #railway in the #UK.
- The average speed of the train is 5 mph (8 km/h).
- The total track length is 4.7 miles (7.5 km).
- It carries around 140,000 passengers each year.
- A round-trip to the summit takes approx. 2.5 hours, including a 30-minute stop at the summit visitor centre.
- From the #summit station, it's only 68 ft (21 m) to the summit cairn (though it's quite steep).
- Trains are scheduled at 30-minute intervals, subject to passenger demand.
- The SMR currently operates 3 coal-fired steam locomotives and 4 diesel locomotives. Last week, only diesel locomotives were in service, as the heritage steam locomotives typically run from June to September.
- On its official opening day in April 1896, one of the locomotives derailed and fell down the mountain, resulting in one fatality. Following this incident, the maximum allowed train weight was reduced, and a gripper system was installed on the rack railway. It's been full steam ahead ever since.

Laax by night

Abends, als die Sonne unter- und der Mond aufgegangen war, wurde der Laaxersee in ein spezielles, fahles Licht getaucht. Zu Beginn unseres Spaziergangs um den See am Freitag hoben sich die Berggipfel noch recht klar vom langsam dunkler werdenden Himmel ab.

Viele Leute waren rund um den See versammelt, um den Saxophon- und Klarinettenklängen zweier Musiker zu lauschen, die eine Open-Air-Serenade am See-Ufer gaben. Andere genossen im Halbdunkel ihre letzten Bäder des Abends.

Eine schöne Stimmung!

Das ist der archäologische Fundplatz #Lato auf #Kreta

Der Ort zieht sich über gleich zwei #Berggipfel. Man hat von hier aus eine perfekte Sicht auf das #Mittelmeer, das aber weit weg ist. So sieht an angreifende Schiffe von weitem, aber auch die Liebsten, die Heim kommen. Gleichzeitig wohnte man zwischen dem 8. und 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Gut geschützt, wenngleich auch etwas ungemütlich. Aber Sicherheit ist wichtiger, denn Lato war einmal eine #Piratensiedlung:
