Flying Without a Rudder

Aircraft typically use a vertical tail to keep the craft from rolling or yawing. Birds, on the other hand, maneuver their wings and tail feathers to counter unwanted motions. Researchers found that the list of necessary adjustments is quite small: just 4 for the tail and 2 for the wings. Implementing those 6 controllable degrees of freedom on their bird-inspired PigeonBot II allowed the biorobot to fly steadily, even in turbulent conditions, without a rudder. Adapting such flight control to the less flexible surfaces of a typical aircraft will take time and creativity, but the savings in mass and drag could be worth it. (Image credit: E. Three's a Crowd

There were originally 2 swallows perched on the post but then the third one came down at them and stirred it all up.

With these new methods, we can estimate the wing area of thousands of bird specimens that already have wingspan information in research collections, including rare and extinct species, benefiting studies of #birdflight, #movementecology, and #dispersal.

celebrating a legendary #gratefuldead show from a few dozen years ago & change today in upstate new york. i'm speaking, of course, of the time future #jazz #radio legend #PhilSchaap mixed live sound for the dead at SUNY delhi in 1970, just after owsley lost touring privileges. from this interview: maxraskin.com/interviews/inter
appropriate for a show mixed by a dean benedetti lover, the only audio is one of the best tapes with the worst sound: archive.org/details/gd70-05-08 #BirdFlight #deadfreaksunite

Where I think #birdflight is going is a multiverse of active but not famous people in Masdo, paid content creators on substack and post with gamers, sports, global south and of course right wing people on a rump Twitter.

Uncomfortable reality is that rump Twitter is still probably 80%+ of the market. If Elmo does not spook the advertisers too hard it can still work in time for him.

But the disruption may benefit our space the most in terms of creativity and innovation.
