@stephanie yes! I didn't like broccoli nor Brussels sprouts as a kid, but then tried putting mayonnaise on them and it changed my mind. Still like them that way, though lots of other ways too. @Jeffrey

The universe seems stacked against brassicas.

I was expecting an army of slugs, however it was cabbage worms that chomped some of my cauliflowers down to the ribs.

They're sneaky bastards so I smooshed every single one I could find and then showered all the plants in neem oil solution.

I have no idea what I'm doing.

The magnolias were blooming in the night sky & last year's #kale was still going strong. I leaned over the edge & grabbed myself a giant leaf to munch on, as part of my #spa #ritual. (2/2) #lacinato #somuchkale #brassicas #healthyfood #greenvegetables #selfcare #trends

Buenas, 🙋‍♀️

O no...

¡Feliz semana! 🤗

🥦Let's talk #Brassicas! Self-incompatibility and long #growth cycles make breeding a long, tedious process, but a new in vivo #haploid #seed induction method that does not require #tissue culture may change all that!

I was discussing vegetables with a coworker (a common occurrence when one works with botanists) and she had never heard about any of these brassica memes. So, courtesy of my lovely coworker who gives me pepper plants and wildflower seeds, please enjoy some brassica oleracea humor :)

#brassicas #vegetables

Astronauts/"always has been" meme. Two astronauts staring at a diagram of how the mustard plant gave rise to a number of different popular vegetables e.g. broccoli, kohlrabi, brussels sprouts, and cauliflower (instead of at the earth in space). One says "Wait, it's all mustard?" The other, pointing a gun at the first, says, "Always has been"Artifical selection (a sullen looking white guy) says "I made a new vegetable"

Skeptical older white lady says, "New vegetable or brassica oleracea?"

"Brassica oleracea again"Diagram: A mustard plant labeled Brassica oleracea with arrows extending to its artifically selected children, with appropriate illustrations for each:
Selection for terminal buds: Cabbage
Selection for lateral buds: brussels sprouts
Selection for stem: Kohlrabi
Selection for leaves: Kale
Selection for stems and flower: Broccoli
Selection for flower clusters: Cauliflower

I just remembered that I ate the sweetest, most delicious brussels sprouts the other day. I asked the chef what was his secret, and he told me they had been halved, seasoned, then deep-fried.

I will try to emulate this recipe one day.

When I saw this enormous cabbage at the Kingsbury Drive Market this morning, I was reminded that I had run out of #kimchi. I couldn't not buy it (along with 3 enormous leeks).

Here's what I did with it:

🏺 Cabbage 2260g
🏺 Celery 465g
🏺 Leek 460g
🏺 Red capsicum 430g
🏺 Carrot 350g
🏺 Garlic x6 cloves
🏺 Gochugang paste 4Tbsp
🏺 Sea salt 2Tbsp
🏺 Chilli flakes 1Tbsp

I like #brassicas. And grow a few in my garden. Of course, nature being what it is, there are others who like brassicas, and #cabbage too. One is the large white cabbage #butterfly. She lays her eggs in groups, and the resulting #caterpillars go on a feeding frenzy, demolishing occasional plants, but if we like to see these butterflies, an odd sacrificial plant is needed. To me this isn't food waste, but part of the natural World.

Oh, I forgot about the #tomatoes - I grabbed about a pound from the various indeterminates. The Romas are about to get ripe! The earliest of them are yellow now.
There’s a goth jay who lives in the big Doug fir in the pasture, and they’re in heaven now that this #sunflower is ripe. Between nice soft sunflower seeds and the scavenged chicken scratch, they must be running out of spots to cache food 😂
The established winter #brassicas are still doing great. No signs of whatever the evil white moths are sometimes laying on them - I think between the chickens and the wasps, they don’t have a chance. Pictured are Brussels sprouts, #cabbage, and #cauliflower.
I’ve got another planting of brassicas coming along in the grow tent inside. The warm weather should turn mild again tomorrow (I’m sorry if it’s 108°f where you live) and I think I’ll start hardening them off soon. Now that I know how tasty the chickens think they are, I’ll plant them in already caged beds. The newest ones are mostly winter cabbage, and I’m betting on a mild enough fall to get a nice late crop.

Looking the long way down a long raised bed. It’s a tomato jungle, with masses of small green pear shaped fruit growing and ripening.A huge, short, half-ripe sunflower. Maybe fifteen percent of the ripening seeds have already been plucked out and fluttered away with.A bed of lush Brussels sprouts. Behind them is a bed of much less lush cabbages, each protected by a conical chicken wire hat. Chickens prefer cabbage to sprouts, who knew!A short raised bed of cauliflower, protected with a pvc pipe cage and chicken wire. The pieces of wire are laced together like Frankenstein’s gardener with a bright blue string.

@gardening I’ve gotten the last of the #garlic hung to dry and replanted the garlic beds in winter #brassicas. And by Jove, I’ve almost grown my first ripe #tomato!
I’m not a fan of instructional videos in general, but I forced myself to watch most of a three minute video to learn how to hang the garlic. I’ll just leave the link here!

I ended up with one bed of Brussels sprouts, a bed and a half of cabbage, and a bed and a half of purple cauliflower. The Brussels went out last week and they transplanted fine and are gaining in size. Hopefully today’s babies will take hold just as well, and then all I have to do is defend them until winter. No problem 😂

I harvested some cabbages because the worms/beetles/bugs are multiplying like crazy & the cabbages are getting ready to bolt. Mulch your #brassicas with #wool. Way less bugs in the plants mulched with wool! #GardeningMastodon #food

You should know that I love #brassicas, in my role as a #Plantscience editor/writer and as a cook and eater of veg.

Now recovering after my first proper gardening session since surgery. Achieved my priority task of pulling/digging up the white butterfly sanctuary aka the kale patch. Every few years I decide to have another go at growing brassicas. Every time I’m reminded of why I stopped in the first place 😆 #gardening #brassicas
