@BobLefridge Me too. It turns out it’s commonly called “bubbling” and lots of bees do it. The Hyleas bees I saw yesterday were sitting on leaves in the sun by the flowers and slowly drawing the nectar bubble in and out of their mouth.

I found this recent review paper on the behaviour. “ Nectar concentrating has various purposes, including preparation for long-term storage in hives, modification before adding to larval provisions, removal of excess water for efficient storage in the crop, thermoregulation, and potentially for nest construction.”

It was raining, which meant no cookfire--the smoke could reveal our location.

Then Lucky returned from patrol, yanking along a bedraggled waif.

“I’m not a spy! I’m a fire witch” she insisted. “I’ll prove it. I can make you a smokeless fire. #Trust me?”

We figured any sign of smoke, we’d douse the fire, so we let her do her thing. Soon a pot of welcome soup was #bubbling over magic flames. We didn’t know their blue color was a beacon for the enemy’s watchcrows.
