Our modern lifestyle, characterized by constant connectivity, has profoundly impacted our perception of the intangible world surrounding us. In our fast-paced lives, we have become increasingly disconnected from nature, allowing its wildness to fade into the background amidst the daily stress, endless scrolling, and relentless pursuit of material things that dominate our attention. This disconnection can leave us feeling lost and overwhelmed, as we often overlook the beauty and tranquility that the natural world has to offer. It is essential to reconnect with our natural selves to remember the essence within that can guide us through life’s challenges with grace and ease: our intuition, our sacred connection to the earth, and our voice, which deserves to be heard. By fostering a deeper relationship with the environment around us, we can cultivate mindfulness, find harmony within ourselves, and unlock a sense of fulfillment that transcends the superficial distractions of modern living, ultimately leading us to a more meaningful and balanced existence.

Third eye Chakra

One way to connect more deeply with our inner knowingness is through working with the third eye or ajna chakra, which serves as a powerful center of intuition and insight. This energy point, located between the eyebrows, is often associated with our ability to see beyond the physical realm and tap into our more profound understanding and spiritual awareness. By engaging in practices such as meditation, visualization, and mindfulness, we can cultivate a stronger connection to this chakra. As we nurture this inner eye, we may unlock profound insights about ourselves and our life’s path, fostering greater clarity and purpose. Embracing the energies of the ajna chakra enables us to transcend limitations, fostering a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment where we learn to trust our authentic selves and intuitive guidance.

Deepening Self-Awareness

Daily practice with this meditation will allow a deeper understanding of self and our relationships, providing the time and space necessary to explore our thoughts, feelings, and patterns of behavior. As we engage in this mindful practice, we become more attuned to our inner voice, fostering self-awareness and acceptance. This journey of introspection reveals layers of our identity and connection with others, gradually enabling us to shift into authenticity. Through consistent reflection and openness, we begin to embrace our true nature, aligning our actions with our values and establishing deeper, more meaningful connections with those around us.

A Brief Guide to Meditation

Meditation is a gentle yet powerful practice that nurtures relaxation, self-awareness, and a profound connection to your inner self; it has the potential to be genuinely transformative, guiding you to shift your perspective and embrace personal growth. Here’s a guide to help you begin your journey:

1. Find a Quiet Space

Choose a location where you won’t be disturbed. This could be a quiet room in your home, a peaceful outdoor area, or any place where you feel comfortable.

2. Get Comfortable

Sit or lie down in a position that feels good for you. You can sit cross-legged on the floor, in a chair with your feet flat on the ground, or even lie down if that feels better. Keep your back straight but relaxed.

3. Close Your Eyes

Gently close your eyes to limit distractions. This helps you focus inward.

4. Focus on Your Breath

Take a few deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Then, allow your breathing to settle into a natural rhythm. Focus your attention on the sensation of your breath entering and leaving your body.

5. Clear Your Mind

Thoughts may arise, and that’s perfectly normal. When this happens, acknowledge the thoughts without judgment and gently bring your focus back to your breath.

6. Use a Mantra (Optional)

If it helps, you can silently repeat a word or phrase (mantra) to maintain your focus. Popular mantras include “peace,” “calm,” or “I am present.”

7. Set a Timer

If you’re just starting, it might be beneficial to set a timer for 5-10 minutes. As you become more comfortable with meditation, you can gradually extend the duration.

8. End Your Session Gently

When the timer goes off, take a moment to notice how you feel. Slowly open your eyes and bring your awareness back to your surroundings. Take a few deep breaths before rising.

9. Practice Regularly

To reap the benefits of meditation, practice regularly. Whether it’s daily or a few times a week, consistency is key.

10. Be Patient and Kind to Yourself

Meditation is a personal journey; be patient and compassionate with yourself as you explore your practice.

By incorporating these steps into your routine, you can cultivate a fulfilling meditation practice that promotes tranquility and deeper self-awareness.

Me and Buzz

I have been meditating for over 20 years, and the benefits are immense. This practice has not only enhanced my mental clarity but also enabled me to cultivate a profound sense of inner peace. It allows me to see the true nature of situations more clearly, leading to better emotional stability and resilience when faced with hardships, such as chronic illness. Moreover, meditation fosters a profound connection to my thoughts and feelings, allowing me to respond to life’s challenges with calmness and understanding. With consistent practice, I’ve learned to embrace each moment, acknowledging the ebb and flow of emotions while remaining grounded in the present.

How has meditation helped you? Or are you new to the practice and unsure how to begin?

A shuttered strip mall near you

With a Halloween party on the horizion we needed ideas. Cappell’s downtown had some fine options. A place I used to rent a Victorian getup for prom back in high school was closed for good.

So it was off to Spirit Halloween in the burbs!

Sidenote: Spirit Halloween was founded by Joseph Marver who deftly utilized short term leases and capitalized on the growing popularity of Halloween goods. He eventually sold the business to Spencers Gifts in 1999.

Yup, that Spencers from the malls.

Watched CNBC piece about Spirit Halloween which was a solid mix of puff piece for investors and kind of interesting: How Spirit Halloween Became A Billion-Dollar Business

I didn’t pull the trigger on any costumes this day, but I did find some of the selection curious.

Oh, because every company must grow, get ready for Spirit Christmas stores coming soon to a shuttered strip mall near you.

RECOLLECTION

In April of 2016 I had just started my Fellowship year at People’s Liberty. During this tenure I shifted focus away from this photo journal and to the Photocorps project.

I still took daily photos. Many ended up in social media for the project, but there are thousands more just waiting to be discovered.

Bright spots emerge all the time in these daily recollections into this day in the past. Like this walkabout in mom’s garden.

I always love discovering photos with her, even if it’s just her hand holding a tree in bloom or her toes by hostas breaking ground.

I remember her saying I must take some lilacs home and found a matching vase. (A tip of the hat to my nephews for helping me figure out what the flowers were!)

I always #push myself way too hard.

I was reading a thread of photographers asking how to stay motivated when it’s dreary outside. My solution is to capture things of negligible interest, like this Jaguar S-Type that was produced sometime between 1999–2007.

It was parked outside the store that sells stuff to put in and around one’s house, like mirrors of various sizes and shapes, American flags made of wood, or signs to hang up by the toilet that say “hello sweet cheeks.”

I was looking for a rug and left dismayed.

Earlier a canvasser knocked on our door and I apologized for my outfit while sharing voting priorities. They kept their distance and after seeing myself in the mirror shortly afterward, I understand why — but it was a Saturday morning and I did apologize for my mixed prints at the outset, so I feel like I did my duty.

Our third visit (previously)

So we’re there on the first day trees are for sale and they only have one variety in-stock—Fraser firs—same kind we had last year, but I can’t remember for sure.

I google the variety on the spot to check and see if they’re any good.

Search results prove favorable.

Back when I was a kid, you had to rely on personal knowledge, memory and experience to make such decisions.

Thank goodness that’s over.

Hauled the thing home and gravely accepted that two strands of lights were half-blown. We made do with them and went about the business of decorating. Been on this planet for 30-some-odd years and it hasn’t gotten old yet.

This is how it turned out:

…is before 9am on a weekday.

I’m seldom out and about this early, but needed to pop up to my doctor for some bloodwork. I’m feeling better, but they want to make sure everything is copacetic. It was a quick visit, in and out in minutes. (Results will come later.)

This is one of the rare times I didn’t have a list for Trader Joes.

It was both delightful and kind of confusing — I needed a plan or vague goals. (All of this a common theme that can apply to many things.)

I wandered leisurely, happy to be out and about.

Kathryn and I share snack review texts all the time — with 1 through 10 ratings, sometimes with commentary. Eventually we’re going to collect them in a web page (or subdomain!)

In the meantime, here is a Pepsi Zero Sugar Mango. It tastes exactly like it sounds which can be good or bad, depending on how you feel about soda, Pepsi, and mango flavor.

It is something I would put on a continuum like White Castles… I would have one of these every 7 months and it would be good / fine / a’ight. (But I would not want White Castle to ever go away, and I would not defend this Mango Pepsi.)

Running 10 days behind with posting. Photos are stacking up.

I know several things from this particular day based on digital breadcrumbs:

  • Stock photography sites are now littered with AI images. I’ve decided to learn how to make my own shitty AI images and doing a much better job in short order, which isn’t saying much!
  • Passed by this blue micro-truck on the way to a grocery store.
  • According to my grocery account, I picked up 4 items: salad, bread, plant-based creamer and pork chops.
  • Took a screenshot of today’s music track that played while making dinner. (Apple Music doesn’t feed into Last.fm)
  • Made mashed potatoes from scratch for dinner. Was going to send a photo to my sister but it was so late I didn’t want to pester.
