Learn how Dasharo was brought to the #ASRock SPC741D8 #server platform. In this talk, Michał Kopeć will explain how an existing #coreboot port from KIT was refined, extended, and elevated to the Dasharo Hardware Certification level of quality and features.

Have you met our new StarBook 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻 yet?
It’s been sitting there patiently, like: “Pick me! I’ve got a 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵, I run 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘁, and I’m rocking a 𝟭𝟯.𝟰″ display, what more do you want?”

So somewhat recently I acquired a #Dell #Optiplex 7010 SFF. This one has an #Intel Core i5-3470, 16 GB RAM, and a 480 GB HDD running #Windows 10.
This actually comes from my workplace, and I was lucky enough to keep this machine. My boss once used this as their main computer, but I guess something happened and they've been using a new one since. Thus, right now, I'm going to get data off it and get confirmation we got all the data my boss wants before I completely wipe the thing. Afterwards, I'm going to use it as a server or something and flash #Coreboot on it. (Maybe I'll figure out a way to build my own version of Coreboot with an #edk2 payload). Until then, I've setup a dual boot with Fedora 43 on it in case I need to get any more data off it. Then, I'll put #AlpineLinux on the thing and use it as a server for something.
I'm also taking suggestions on what to do with the thing if anyone has any! :D

Modern x86 systems often block #coreboot support due to the silicon Root of Trust (#RoT) mechanisms like Intel #BootGuard or AMD PSB. While Intel platforms have long had public tooling for status checks, AMD users were left without a reliable method.
Michał Kopeć's presentation introduces psb_status, a lightweight script that fills this gap by verifying AMD PSB configuration directly on target hardware.
Firmware engineer Michał Żygowski shared his experience porting the Gigabyte MZ33-AR1 to #coreboot, detailing the technical process of enabling #AMD server processor support and integrating AMD #OpenSIL. The talk highlights the challenges of adapting a proprietary server platform to open firmware and the steps needed to achieve a successful UEFI payload boot.

That is pretty cool.
What are your plans on #coreboot support?
That is currently a hard requirement for any laptop I would buy new

Is it worth mentioning or promoting minifree.org in the same breath? "Linux/BSD preinstalled laptops with Libreboot BIOS replacement".
They will sell you, among other things, a heavily modified Lenovo Thinkpad T480 with Linux or BSD pre-installed.

Proceeds fund libreboot development.
Seems like #CoC (Codes of Conduct) in #opensource see the abuse that folks predicted will happen. Just with a different twist, harming the people for whose protections they were invented, and not, as feared by the often libertarian-minded detractors, the "right wing".
We had very controversial debates on the subject in the #coreboot project and one result was that we didn't use the "standard CoC" but developed our own.
I think that was a good call back then, we were setting standards in the community (long due!) but being considerate about what we want to achieve.
Turns out that the weakness of CoCs isn't necessarily the phrasing though, but having an arbitration team that evades responsibility.
I left coreboot to seek new adventures, but from what I can tell, their team is the kind of people who remain on top of things.
Any current code of mine that isn't the proprietary stuff of my employer, is all personal, not part of larger projects (and that may or may not be published in the first place), and as such it doesn't really matter if I oblige myself to treat myself well (or is it?).
I still adopted SQLite's Code of Ethics (https://sqlite.org/codeofethics.html) because it fits my world view and the status of these projects: where published, they're still not for contribution.
Oh no, #Intel platform detection isn't that easy.
There is no simple field like platform ID or something in #IFD to determine it.
Also, IFD fields have changed semantics a bit over time.
So #coreboot's ifdtool has some "guessing" and a list of known platforms to apply quirks, with the platform to be passed via CLI, not detected.
I will try my best to use information from the ME #firmware to get a rough idea, e.g. presence of CPDs.
I think that's the way to go.
*sigh*
@novacustom@mastodon.onlin
Thanks, that's great.
I admit I'm still trying to figure out your relationship with the @Dasharo project and, in turn, Dasharo's relationship with #Coreboot project.
Also, I was sad to see that you can't offer secure boot with individual user's own keys. I see you offer it to larger organizations but looks like it's expensive.
& I realize no one else is offering proper (I.e. machine owner control) secure boot at all except you. I just would love it as individual user.
@bkuhn Yes, we have. I think we are more or less the only one in the world who has this?
The proprietary firmware blobs and the openness score are listed per model on the documentation website of the @Dasharo #coreboot firmware. For example, the V54 Series with integrated graphics: https://docs.dasharo.com/variants/novacustom_v540tu/openness-score/

Interesting watching all the outrage regarding #Framework and their support for certain odious figures.
I nearly did buy one, the deciding factor was that I was looking for a machine that ran #Coreboot, with the company providing support for the project. System76 was also considered, but Nvidia… ugh!
Wound up with a Starlabs Starbook VI… AMD version with 64GB RAM. I had some teething problems at first, and also they're still porting Coreboot to the AMD CPU (last I heard it booted, but lots of things didn't work) so mine ended up being shipped with AMI UEFI instead… but things are more or less settled now and I've had no further issues.
Not as modular as the Framework, but still decent repair-ability.
I've heard no reports of them supporting anti-trans people.
