The Tortured Artist Is So Yesterday

41 years ago, Samuel Lipman wrote that an artist’s life is a “constant—and constantly losing—battle” against one’s own limits. That image has lasted because print culture taught us to imagine the artist as a solitary figure whose worth is measured by the perfection of a single, final work. Print fixed texts in place, elevated the individual author, and made loneliness part of the creative job description.

That world is slipping away.
And with it, the tortured artist.

Twittering Machine (Die Zwitscher-Maschine) is a 1922 watercolor with gouache, pen-and-ink, and oil transfer on paper by Swiss-German painter Paul Klee

LLMs have made competent expression abundant. The blank page no longer terrifies; anyone can produce something fluent and polished. When craft becomes cheap, suffering loses its meaning as a marker of artistic seriousness. What becomes scarce instead is the willingness to take a risk—not in private, but in public, where a stance can fail, provoke, or be reshaped by others.

Venkatesh Rao recently argued that authorship is no longer about labor but about courage: the courage to commit to a line of thought and accept the consequences of being wrong. In an era of infinite variations, the decisive act is not creation but commitment. The value lies in staking something of yourself on an idea that may not survive.

This shift is reshaping where culture is made. In what I’ve called the “Cloister Web,” people draft and explore ideas in semi-private creative rooms before carrying only a few into the open. LLMs make experimentation cheap; they also make commitment expensive. The hard part now is choosing which idea you are willing to be accountable for.

As the burden of execution drops, something else rises: genuine collaboration. Not just collaboration with models, but with other humans. Andrew Gelman, reflecting on Lipman in a recent StatModeling post, noted that scientists, too, feel versions of this pressure of the solitary creator. In science, the burden rarely falls on one person. The struggle is distributed across collaborative projects that outlive any single contributor.

Groups can explore bolder directions than any one creator working alone. Risk spreads, ideas compound, and the scale of what can be attempted expands. The solitary genius was an artifact of print; the collaborative creative lab is the natural form of the world we are entering.

This leads to a claim many will resist but few will be able to ignore: the single author is beginning to collapse as a cultural technology. What will matter in the coming decades is not the finished artifact but the evolving line of thought carried forward by teams willing to take risks together.

The tortured artist belonged to an age defined by scarcity, perfection, and solitude. Today’s creator faces a different task: to choose a risk worth taking and the collaborators worth taking it with. The work endures not because it is flawless, but because a group has committed to pushing it forward.

Pain is optional now.

Risk isn’t.

Tomorrow (Thursday, 21 August) I’ll join a panel at the Tallinna Kunstihoone for the catalogue launch of the Tallinna Graafikatriennaal / Tallinn Print Trienniali in Tallin (Estonia) together with Marika Agu , Tõnis Jürgens and Brigita Reinert. Indeed, in the catalogue there are among the others two texts of mines: Trükitud versus elektrooniline (Print vs. Electrons) and Lõputu kirjastamise paradigma: ruum, aeg ja mälu (The Endless Publishing Paradigm: Space, Time, and Memory) for the very first time translated into Estonian, which is of course a huge honour!

@LLMs I use Chatgpt for blogging, so yep - searching and structuring chats is a big want for me.

It kept forgetting my 'voice' and themes I want to weave in my posts, so I've asked it to search it's memory and our interactions and give me text to put infront of each chat to remind it. I've tweaked it and saved it as a Google Keep note to copy and paste in. Hoping that works

[Publication] Critical Digital Humanities: text, code and algorithms

The timing of the academia, it is known, can be really long and sometimes things just get stuck. I forgot about this article for a long time, then in the last days I remembered it. It is the updated version of a paper I presented at a conference in april 2021 (actually, it was my first conference as a doctoral candidate) and I thought it was useless in a folder on my laptop so I published it on Zenodo. Now it’s out there – to be read and criticised, to be part of the debate about tools and methods for Digital Humanities or, at least, just to show the starting point of my research. Here is the abstract:

Writing is a technology and technology is never neutral. Furthermore, in the digital environment everything is writing: behind every piece of content “is a written system of protocols and controls” (Seymour, 2019). Digital technologies, including the software used in Digital Humanities, help researcher all around the world with new tools and new approaches, but what do we know about these software? About how they are built and structured? About the codes and algorithms they contain? Some researchers have argued that we can bring the critical approach we use in Humanities to the Digital (Berry, 2014), also with the trans-disciplinary help of Modern Languages studies (Pitman – Taylor, 2017): Critical Digital Humanities. But there are other ways to participate “critically” in DH. First, we can consider electronic literature as DH on the basis that “a computer is not a tool or prosthesis that helps us to accomplish our work; rather, it is the medium in which we work” (Grigar, 2021). Second, since we are in a digital environment, we can use the concept of “hacking” as a method (Klein, 2011; Saum-Pascual, 2020;), not limiting it to the software world. If this approach is workable, it can help to overcome the postmodernist “naive trust in the screen which makes the very quest for ‘what lies behind’ irrelevant” (Žižek, 2008). Codes and algorithms are languages – “the ur-writing of contemporary civilization” (Seymour, 2019) – and, as languages, shape our experience of reality: understanding them, especially in the research field, is a necessary step to build an approach that is, at the same time, theoretical, practical and critical.

NEW BOOK: Tactical Publishing! I’m very excited to announce my new book “Tactical Publishing, Using Senses, Software, and Archives in the Twenty-First Century”, now published by MIT Press. It has taken many years to research and finalise the book, which I hope will be a solid sequel to "Post-Digital Print", and now it is finally in print. A huge thank you to all the generous people who have supported me over the years (the list is long), especially Ryan Bishop, Jussi Parikka, who along with Scott Rettberg and David Garcia has written very generous praise, my fabulous colleagues Jo Turney and Daniel Cid Moragas at Winchester School of Art - University of Southampton, Sean Cubitt and Doug Sery at MIT Press and Nick Montfort who wrote the beautiful foreword!
