Keitin riisipuuron. Kävin kuntoradalla kameran kanssa, mutta umpipilvistä oli. Tunnistelin perhosia. Säädin kameran kuvatyyliasetuksia.

Linux App Release Roundup (Feb 2025)
February was a bumper month for Linux app updates, bringing new releases of Mozilla Firefox, LibreOffice, ONLYOFFICE and more — as well as a slew of smaller app updates that didn’t get a full-length article on this blog. Rather than skip over them entirely I thought I’d resurrect my Linux Release Roundup thread1 to provide a monthly (perhaps twice-monthly, if there’s a lot) run-through of some of them. After all, for those of us on fixed-release Linux distribution like Ubuntu may find one of these smaller updates fixes a flaw or fleshes out a feature to make it worth upgrading :sys_more_orange:

I've been using "gthumb" for more than 20 years for reviewing / selecting / sorting photos (after I sort/rename them all into folders by date/time of exposure)
shit crashes *constantly* but remains the best option I know for this simple task. Does anyone have any good recommendations for a simple linux-based replacement?
I use the filesystem as my database, am not looking for software which "imports" everything into it's own database (I need to be able to move files around externally)
I think people use darktable, but I'm not sure that is compatible with my file-system-based workflow? Perhaps I can contort my workflow into using this tool, but I would prefer something more file based
I'm looking for a :linux: #Linux image viewer that maintains the zoom level and region while skipping through a glob of images with the arrow or PgUp/PgDown keys.
I have tried (on :nixos: #NixOS):
❌ #ristretto
❌ #gthumb
❌ #viewnior
❌ #geeqie
❌ #qview (broken)
🫤 #sxiv (works in slideshow mode, resest zoom when skipping manually 🙄)
✅ #gwenview (+changed settings&keybindings)
✅ #feh --keep-zoom-vp works
Shout-out to #gthumb for doing a solid chunk of simple-person image manipulation dead easily
After being annoyed for many years by #gthumb's slow #performance when opening an image for viewing from a large directory, I was finally able to record some #profiling data that identifies where gthumb does the excess work, thanks to @hergertme@fosstodon.org's fancy #sysprof 45 with frame pointers in #Fedora 39: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gthumb/-/issues/259#note_1923955
Found something that instantly made me revert from the #Flatpak version of #gthumb to the Fedora-provided RPM: opening an image file via Nautilus, gthumb is unable to see the other media files present in the same folder, so you can't flip thru or do batch operations. I recall the same limitation being present in Amberol.
I didn't see a ticket about this sort of pitfall in Flatpak's issues tracker. Should it be filed there, or is it already possible and an issue ought to be filed on apps?
¡Pendientes!
At all #photo enthusiasts who are using #linux as their OS or #oss in general. How is it going? I am still polishing my stack. Currently, I am using #manjaro #rawtherapee #digikam #gthumb and #nextcloud #joinin

Well, let's have a follow up on my gThumb post, shall we?

I like #LibreOffice because it just works. For that matter, I like #eyeofmate, #gthumb and #tuxpaint because they perform their tasks without crash or obstacle. I have come to appreciate #floss that works.
Linux Mint 21.2 Reveals Codename, Teases Planned Features
Wondering what to expect in Linux Mint 21.2 when it’s released this June? Well, wonder no more. Linux Mint lead Clem Lefebvre has shared a few early details on what we can expect from Linux Mint 21.1 (codename “Victoria” — if you haven’t cottoned on to it yet, each version of Linux Mint gets given a “human” codename because …Well, I’m not really sure why). First up, confirmation of an expected release date: late June. This date is not a surprise and is absolutely in-line with when previous Linux Mint releases emerged. Also, again per tradition, Linux Mint 21.1 will be :sys_more_orange:
