Wow, it's #Gnome3 Version 46 now and still: no picture preview in the file selection dialogue. How is this supposed to be user friendly?
It's not there by default, it's not easily configurable, it's not even in `gnome-tweaks`.
Does KDE support this? Yeah, since about 1876.
Oh, and you know what would be great: if a user knew what the shitty app was actually called to file a bug.
`gnome-tweaks`? Introduces itself as "GNOME-Optimierungen" in German for instance. Good look finding the correct repo, let alone the executable or package if you have to install it.
That thing that says it's called "Settings" in it's info box (in German they say 'settings' now for Einstellungen, I suppose?)? Yeah, it's obviously called `gnome-control-center`! Because, why not?
@thelinuxexperiment I'll always be thankful to #Canonical for getting me into GNU/Linux. I left #Ubuntu when #GNOME2 was no more. I never liked #Unity or #GNOME3.
Trying out #LinuxMint with #Cinammon at the moment, I like everything so far, I think. I catch myself function-buttoning to switch between apps like I do in #Debian with #gnome3 though
does anyone know of a quicker way of changing the sound device in #linux, especially #gnome3, in another way than opening pavucontrol? bonus points if it's easy to reach and doesn't require lots of clicking around, with a keyboard or mouse. I'm trying to make contingency plans for the rare case that my sound may actually die, and therefore orca wouldn't be able to speak, because speech dispatcher won't be able to output sound. This is particularly important when it comes to connecting things which could present themselves as sound output devices even though they aren't in the traditional sense, for example some bluetooth controllers.

IIRC, look and feel of #WindowMaker is inspired by #NeXTSTEP on #NeXT.
And I'm using #Mate, the fork of #Gnome2, until noticing #Gnome3 no longer fits me and Mate was ported to #FreeBSD, maybe on ThinkPad T61, T420 and P52. #Mate seems to be ported to #NetBSD, too.

A good historical lesson to never allow your Open Source project to be threatened/bullied by a larger company into making changes. They could have called Microsoft's bluff and dug their heels in.
#Gnome3 on my #Surface, day something or other: it often forgets to let me tap, or swipe - so i find i have to spam tap almost everything. Given that Gnome seems to have said "bahh, no one wants to use a real computer, lets give you the gimped tablet experience" 15 years ago... theyd be better at letting me open a .md file.
Also that means, for example, if im trying to download from google drive - itll queue up each of those taps. It builds up so many that now the entire computer is frozen and i have to hard power off.
Im sorry Gnome, am i not thinking differently correctly yet?
i remember way back when when #Gnome3 came out, it's like the ubuntu foundation said "god *finally* computers are going to stop being useful and we can all just dick around on tablets". Everyone with some sense hated it.
but now I have a #surface, which is much more "tablet"-y than it is "2-in-1 laptop"-y. So here's my review of the tablet experience on the most tablet-thirsty distribution with the the most tablet-thirsty desktop environment:

It USED to be possible to right-click->new folder while in 'list view' in the old Gnome window manager; but now I can't and i find myself having to constantly switch between icon view to right-click->new folder and list view to order-by->modified date. This is incredibly stupid, I feel like every time we take a step forward in innovation we take two backwards in basic functionality. #linux #gnome3 #opensource #ubuntu
The Cinnamon support for web-apps is leaps and bounds more advanced than the support in #gnome3
I have a bunch of computers that I need to look after and use regularly. 4 at work, a good 10 at home. Some are #windows 10, a few are windows 11, the great majority are some kind of #Devian or #Ubuntu or #linux. This includes a bunch of #raspberrypi, my #household computers, my personal #server, an #FEA computer, work #laptop and #desktop...if you work on #gui stuff, please think about the little guy! Won't you? #win11 p.o.s...then #commandprompt...#Gnome3...#Wayland...#Xorg...#KDE...etc.
