ie. is there a Mastodon server which only exists as an .onion but that isn't using the regular domain system? (and that is connected to ie. mastodon.social or anything else that mastodon.social is connected to)

Ofc you can just paste the #onion URL direct into #Tor as well, but I thought it was cool how it auto redirects (if you set up an HTTP header).
Haven’t set one up for Pleroma because Soapbox needs JS to run and I don’t wanna encourage people to enable JS in Tor.
Actually quite an interesting topic, setting up a #hiddenservice, gonna write a blog post about it.
Obviously this is a basic setup designed for providing an onion service to a public clearnet site. If you wanted to setup an anonymous darknet server there would be many more complex OPSEC considerations when configuring and running it.
But in my case the main URL goes straight to a clearnet site anyway so no bother.

#Tor network has to be available/#anonymous for all, or it w/risk compromising the network for everyone.
Just as allowing everyone to run a relay both protects network + creates "some" small risk at same time - but helps to max #decentralize nodes.
