"Labour has recorded its lowest poll rating since before the 2019 general election. A little under a third of British adults would back #ReformUK if there was a national poll tomorrow. #Labour has dropped a point to 21%, only just ahead of the #Tories, who have jumped three points from last week to 19%. Support for the #LibDems has fallen slightly to 15% while the #Greens are on 11% and the #SNP remain backed by 2% of UK adults."

Lib Dems: Conservatives should be ‘ashamed of their failures’
over prepayment energy meters

Thousands of energy customers who had prepayment energy meters (PPMs)
force-fitted are to receive compensation or have their debts written off,
Ofgem has said.

The regulator announced that eight companies will hand out compensation
and support after a review into consumers struggling with energy bills who
were forced to have pay-as-you-go meters installed.

Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, Wera Hobhouse, who has campaigned on the
issue, said:

AA It is high-time that the victims of this scandal are recognised and properly
compensated after energy companies rode roughshod over them in this
disgraceful way. Those affected have already waited too long for justice. Pay
outs now need to be made in time for the winter months, when we know energy
costs are higher.
The Conservative party neglected these victims and ignored Liberal Democrat
attempts to prevent more people suffering forced installations. Today they
should feel ashamed of their failures.

And to think that some may still not have all their debt written off is simply not
right. These companies need to write off the debts they forced upon the people
who bore the brunt of this scandal.

PA Media reports suppliers will pay £5.6m in compensation - using the
guidelines set out by Ofgem - to 40,000 customers who had an involuntary
PPM installed during the assessment period. Suppliers will also write off a
further £13m of debt from customers.

John Harris is one of the few remaining true journalists. He talks to people, he listens, he reports. He also has an autistic son. He also is an empathetic person.

Here he writes about the complete failure of the UK system to manage the incredible work done by "carers", people who support family members who are disabled or need constant help for one reason or another. Not an easy read.

He also speaks about Ed Davey, the leader of the UK's (left of centre) Lib Dem party. Davfy had multiple personal involvements with Carer roles in his life. Very moving. I completely recalibrated my views about this politician. He's someone real and authentic.

"Previously, we have seen one or other of the #LibDems or #Reform (and their predecessor parties) perform well at a set of local elections. We got a taste in 2024 of what might happen should both perform well at once at a general election, though largely at the expense of an extremely unpopular incumbent party. This week we got a further indication of how this might look when both the ‘main’ parties are seen by the electorate as failed governments."

Shame Labour is terrified/enamoured of racists that they can't trumpet these benefits to the country, so it's to the Lib Dems and Greens to pick up all those votes.

When are service reductions not 'cuts' and when is a government bail out 'not a loan'?

Councillor Ade Adeyemo challenges the Conservatives on likely cuts to council services and the £48.273M government EFS bail out, without which #SolihullCouncil could not balance its books.

Solihull was one of 18 councils who applied for emergency government bailout agreements and were given Exceptional Financial Support (EFS) in February to stave off bankruptcy and help meet their legal duty to balance their books in the next two financial years (2025/26 and 2026/27).

Exceptional Financial Support (EFS) enables councils to take out loans to pay for day-to-day services. The government has said councils will not be able to dispose of community and heritage assets to repay the loans.

Liberal Democrats are concerned that EFS could load the struggling council with further debt and costs in the future and undermine future capital programmes.

Lib Dems say they will force vote in Lords to try to block law
allowing foreign states to part-own UK newspapers

As Mark Sweney reports, the government has decided to allow foreign states
to own stakes of up to 15% in British newspapers. This is primarily to end the
deadlock over the sale of the Daily Telegraph, allowing a consortium backed
by the United Arab Emirates to take over.

@Lazarou @roastinghouse Lib Dems and Green really need to start shouting about what a #Reform government would really look like. For one, say goodbye to the NHS. Probably ditch the minimum wage because it's too "woke". Food standards going down.

I don't get why Labour is racing to the bottom by pandering to the Reform racists. Sure, let's be more like Trumpian USA and see how far it gets us. Well, Starmer will be okay, he's rich.

Some voters are just racist and nothing will change their minds. Some are just ignorant, and will believe whatever crap Farridge, Rogan and... well I was going to say Badenoch, but maybe not her... But they'll believe whatever the populists tell them, because it's an easy answer. Like my Johnson-fanboy former colleague, who is otherwise intelligent, but falls for this crap. It's all the immigrants' and asylum seekers' fault I can't get a council flat, apparently. No, it's the fault of successive governments selling council stock and allowing oligarchs and wealthy foreign investors to buy up properties and leave them unoccupied, because they don't see housing as a human need, but a commodity to be traded. This is the message the #LibDems and #Greens need to get out. People need to see who the real enemy is. And it starts with wealthy grifters like Farridge.

#LibDems launch ‘#Reform watch’ to monitor party in local government

The Liberal Democrats have set up an internal “Reform watch” system to monitor Nigel Farage’s party in local government, with Ed Davey saying Labour and the Conservatives are too scared of the threat from Reform to hold it to account.

The Lib Dem leader defended his party’s performance in last week’s local elections, saying council contests where they unexpectedly ended up behind Reform mainly happened because of a collapse in votes for other parties.

As well as gaining more than 160 councillors and taking control of three new councils, the Lib Dems are the biggest party in three others, and in four areas came second to Reform – which will be the core of the monitoring project, intended to scrutinise Reform’s mayors as well as councils.

Finally a mainstream party holding the #fascists to account rather than pandering to them. I wish the Lib Dems would take over as the party representing the centre and left. Labour have brought in some good legislation, like increased workers' rights and holding water company execs to account for illegally dumping sewage, but the way Starmer keeps pandering to the racists is just stupid. They should be showing that it's not whatever scapegoat minority of the day that's responsible for them struggling to make ends meet, but the rich, like their saviour Frogface Farridge.

@roastinghouse the way that Labour doesn't care about the majority of the votes they lose to the Greens and Lib Dems but obsess over the ones they lose to ReformUK tells me that decent people no longer have a home in that party.
