You would wish that it wouldn't be necessary, but alas it seems it is. Thanks to @thewildlifetrusts for producing a report on the scale of impact of bats & newts on planning applications. Nature isn't the problem. https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/sites/default/files/2025-05/Planning%20on%20bats%20and%20newts%20-%20FullReport.pdf #nature #bats #newts #planning
A newt stranded on the footpath alongside the Forth and Clyde Canal Glasgow that I can across on my run this morning. I moved it into the grass at the side, but at least two others I saw weren't so lucky. Not too sure if there's anything that can be done to prevent it, but it's quite a common occurence along this tow path.

I went back to that pond today, this time equipped with two tele lenses and polarisation filters. :awesome:

I also saw these #newts (Ichthyosaura alpestris). I like newts! Need to return to their pond with a better lens.

Today I did some 'pond dipping ': dragging a net through our tiny garden pond to see what's in there (as well as 100s of common frog tadpoles- see previous posts).
I fished out two newts and at first thought they were the usual smooth newts, also known as common newts, but it turns out they are palmate newts.
The 2 identifying features of this species are male has webbed rear feet and a spike on the end of his tail.

Habe mal getestet, meine ältere GoPro 8 ins Wasser zu halten.

Noch verbesserungswürdig, aber schon toll. Halbe Geschwindigkeit btw.
The California newt (Taricha torosa) emerges with the rains, trekking to ponds and streams to breed. Its bright orange belly warns predators of its potent toxin—tetrodotoxin, the same deadly compound found in pufferfish. Look closely for newts and egg sacs!
