🔧 The tech oracle hath spoken: prioritize what's *actually* important! 🚀 Because, apparently, smart folks are shockingly bad at deciding what matters most. 📉 But don't worry, just punt those decisions to your manager – after all, why bother using your own brain? 🙃

Sentinel Tip - Prioritize Data Sources: Identify and prioritize critical data sources for ingestion. Prioritization ensures that the most important data is collected first. #DataSources #Prioritization #Ingestion

Last week, the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against the FCC,
rejecting its authority to classify broadband as a Title II “telecommunications service.”

In doing so, the court removed net neutrality protections for all Americans
and  took away the FCC’s ability to meaningfully regulate internet service providers.

This ruling fundamentally gets wrong the reality of internet service we all live with every day.
Nearly 80% of Americans view broadband access to be as important as water and electricity.
It is no longer an extra, non-necessary “information service,” as it was seen 40 years ago,
but it is a vital medium of communication in everyday life.

Business, health services, education, entertainment, our social lives, and more have increasingly moved online.
By ruling that broadband “information service” and not a “telecommunications service”
this court is saying that the ISPs that control your broadband access will continue to face little to no oversight for their actions.
This is intolerable.
Net neutrality is the principle that ISPs treat all data that travels over their network equally,
without improper discrimination in favor of particular apps, sites, or services.
At its core, net neutrality is a principle of equity and protector of innovation
—that, at least online, large monopolistic ISPs don’t get to determine winners and losers.
Net neutrality ensures that users determine their online experience, not ISPs.
As such, it is fundamental to user choice, access to information, and free expression online.

By removing protections against actions like #blocking, #throttling, and #paid #prioritization,
the court gives those willing and able to pay ISPs an advantage over those who are not.
It privileges large legacy corporations that have partnerships with the big ISPs,
and it means that newer, smaller, or niche services will have trouble competing, even if they offer a superior service.
It means that ISPs can throttle your service
–or that of, say, a fire department fighting the largest wildfire in state history.
They can block a service they don’t like.
In addition to charging you for access to the internet, they can charge services and websites for access to you, -- artificially driving up costs.
And where most Americans have little choice in home broadband providers, i
t means these ISPs will be able to exercise their #monopoly power not just on the price you pay for access, but how you access and engage with information as well.
Moving forward, now more than ever it becomes important for individual states to pass their own net neutrality laws,
or defend the ones they have on the books.
#California passed a gold standard net neutrality law in 2018 that has survivedjudicial scrutiny.
It is up to us to ensure it remains in place.
#Congress can also end this endless whiplash of reclassification and decide, once and for all, by passing a law classifying broadband internet services firmly under Title II.
Such proposals have been introduced before;
they ought to be introduced again.

The Challenge of Finding True Agile Experts

A long time ago, when I was a junior Scrum Master, my Chief Agile Coach posed a thought-provoking question:
“If you had a limited budget, would you hire a Scrum Master or a Software Engineer?”

At the time, I replied, “A Software Engineer, because they produce measurable output.”

Now, years later, I reflect on that conversation with a deeper understanding. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside exceptional Agile Coaches, Scrum Masters, and Product Owners. Yet, let’s be honest:

The majority of Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches lack a clear understanding of the how and why behind their roles. Many find themselves stuck in these positions, not out of passion or conviction, but because they see no alternatives. Instead of pursuing what they believe is right, they focus on maintaining their roles, often to the detriment of their teams and organizations.

The market is saturated with so-called Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches. For every open position, there are often over 200 applicants. Since these roles are unregulated, anyone can claim the title. Unfortunately, this influx of underqualified individuals has created challenges for the Agile community.

The Problem with Unqualified Agile Practitioners

Agile practitioners are perceived as experts, wielding authority. However, when they lack the necessary experience or knowledge, they themselves become the biggest impediments. This issue is compounded when they fail to listen to those they aim to serve, addressing superficial concerns rather than solving real problems. Instead of driving transformation, they retreat into an “Agile kindergarten,” disconnected from reality.

Moreover, the oversupply of candidates drives salaries down, making these roles less attractive to true experts. As a result, the market loses talented professionals who could excel in these positions, creating a vicious cycle.

What Makes a Great Agile Expert?

A true Agile expert must navigate a complex and diverse set of responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  1. Team and Dependency Mapping
Utilizing frameworks like Team Topologies to visualize and optimize team structures.
  2. Implementing the Right Workflows
Choosing and establishing methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban based on team needs.
  3. Scaling Agile
Adopting frameworks like Nexus, Spotify, Scrum@Scale, or SAFe to scale Agile practices effectively.
  4. Ensuring Transparency
Leveraging tools such as Azure DevOps, Jira, and Confluence to provide visibility into workflows.
  5. Metrics and Retrospectives
Establishing metrics and cascading retrospectives to identify and address impediments.
  6. Teaching Best Practices
Guiding teams on concepts like Definition of Done (DoD), Definition of Ready (DoR), OKRs, and Acceptance Criteria (AC).
  7. Driving DevOps Adoption
Helping developers embrace DevOps practices, if necessary.
  8. Facilitating Vision and Strategy
Supporting the creation of visions, missions, and strategies at both the organizational and team levels.
  9. Effort and Value Estimation
Introducing estimation techniques like T-shirt sizes or story points, and prioritization methods like WSJF or Cost of Delay.
  10. Conflict Resolution and Coaching
Combining skills in mediation and coaching to empower individuals, resolve conflicts, and harmonize Agile methods with existing structures.

This list only scratches the surface of what a skilled Agile practitioner must handle. Organizations seeking to hire an Agile Coach should ask candidates to explain these methodologies. Doing so can reveal whether they possess the expertise needed for the role.

Reflecting on the Industry Today

There was a time when companies hired almost anyone with a self-declared title of Scrum Master or Agile Coach. That window gave me the chance to enter this profession. However, times have changed, and so has my perspective.

If my Chief Agile Coach asked me the same question today, I’d answer differently:
“I would hire a qualified Scrum Master—someone with both experience and a strong theoretical foundation. This is a critical role, and you can’t entrust it to just anyone with a certification.”

Agility works. It offers practical solutions to structural challenges that companies face. While traditional waterfall project management isn’t a viable alternative, the challenge lies in finding the right people to implement Agile effectively. Companies must embrace agility to adapt and compete, but doing so successfully requires truly qualified Agile Coaches and Scrum Masters.

The thing about #ADHD is that I have ~50 #Projects in various stages of progress going at any time.

I've gotten really good at ensuring I can get back into a project even after a haitius.

But I am incredibly bad at prioritizing 😣

And because there's 50 projects to pick from, it's super easy to pick one that 1) I haven't worked on in a while so it feels novel, or 2) One that brings joy in the moment, but prevents more important work getting done.

Anyone have tips for better #Prioritization?

I feel like I dropped a ball at work. I did not, but I feel like I did.

One of the guys in my group was struggling with an issue on Friday. He was sending out chat messages to the rest of us during the morning and I was chipping in where I could. His problem involved a functionality that 10 years ago I was the authority on. It’s been a long time since I’ve had to look into it myself, but I am still often the guy who can straighten things out even though I don’t personally support customers anymore and therefore never have this sort of issue assigned to me directly.

He asked if anyone was available to jump on a video chat and look things over with him. Right about the same time my boss’ boss pulled a whole bunch of people, including me, into a different discussion and I had to shift my focus to that. By the start of the work day today (Monday) my issue was pretty much worked out but my coworker was still struggling. He was on another video call with a few people from other groups and they were trying to figure out what was going wrong. I joined the call and within a few minutes knew what the problem was and how to fix it.

Damn it.

By 10:00am today everything was fine and dandy and right as rain. That’s good. What I am upset with myself about is that if I could have just freed up a few minutes on Friday I could have saved my coworker a lot of stress and had it all wrapped up three days earlier. The customer would have been happy, my coworker would have been happy, and I would have felt like a (very minor) hero. Instead, I feel like let everyone down. Again, I did not, and the thing I was looking at on Friday is really important and has all sorts of upper management eyes on it, but I still wish I could have been there for my coworker sooner than I was. That’s all.
