Good morning. Last night was a big one for Democrats.

A rebuke

Zohran Mamdani, 34, will be the next mayor of New York City, the youngest in more than a century. The democratic socialist will also be the city’s first Muslim mayor. Abigail Spanberger will be Virginia’s first female governor. In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill cruised to victory in a governor’s race that polls had projected would be neck and neck.

And in California, voters passed a ballot measure to redraw the state’s maps in Democrats’ favor, which is likely to yield as many as five House seats for the party next year.

Turnout was extraordinary: The New York mayor’s race drew more than two million voters, almost double the 1.1 million people who voted for mayor four years ago. The New Jersey governor’s race topped three million votes for the first time.

As my colleague Lisa Lerer wrote, the results showed that Democrats — beaten soundly in all seven presidential battleground states just a year ago, losing control of the Senate and failing to win the House — can still accomplish the most important goal in politics: “They can win. And win big.”

The results amounted to a loud rebuke of President Trump’s first year back in office. A year ago, he won the White House on promises to fix the economy. Yesterday, his party’s losses showed the high political price that a party in power can pay when voters are still feeling squeezed.

Many US federal judges aren’t beating around the bush in challenging Trump’s illegal undermining of their authority, and even conservative Chief Justice Roberts delivered a rare rebuke of the President, and that’s etymologically appropriate. The idiom beating around the bush was originally a hunting expression referring to disturbing trees or bushes to cause birds or other game to come out. The word bush itself comes from Old English bysc (which is only attested as part of placenames), ultimately from a Proto-Germanic root *busk- “bush”. This root was borrowed into Old French as busche “wood”, which produced the verb buschier “to strike, chop wood”, and when combined with the prefix re- “back” became Anglo-Norman French rebuker “to force back, to check, defeat, to reprimand, to attack verbally”, and was borrowed into English as rebuke in the 14th c.

How hurricane falsehoods are dividing the Republican Party

As Donald Trump and his allies spread false claims about Hurricanes Helene and Milton,
the Republican Party has split into two camps:
🔸those who try to dispel the falsehoods,
♦️and those who are doubling down on them.

 #Helene made landfall Sept. 26, tearing through parts of Florida and Georgia before devastating much of western North Carolina,
ultimately causing more than 230 deaths.

#Milton made landfall Wednesday evening near Sarasota, Fla., bringing powerful winds, tornadoes and deadly floodwaters.

 As the country digs out, Republicans in storm-battered states appear torn between the #need to #curb #misinformation and 🔥#fear of drawing a #rebuke from Trump just weeks before the election.

Many lawmakers and officials have sought to counter these rumors 🔸without directly criticizing the former president or their party.

 One of the most prevalent falsehoods spread by Trump is the claim that the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, has used some disaster-relief funds to help migrants.

Though the emergency agency and migrant-relief programs are both part of the Department of Homeland Security, ⭐️their funds are in separate accounts,
and money earmarked for aid to migrants can’t be transferred to cover hurricane costs.
