Eine Person postet auf #Bluesky gerne eine Liste von securemessagingapps.com und vergibt dort Punkte für die Messenger. Da sie sich leider an diversen Stellen verrechnet hat habe ich hier mal die korrektur:
#Threema (83 Punkte)
#Session (80 Punkte)
#SimpleX (79 Punkte)
#Signal (78 Punkte)
#Wire (64 Punkte)
#Amazon #Wickr Me (61 Punkte)
#Element ( #Matrix ) (56 Punkte)
#Viber (39 Punkte)
#Apple #iMessage (37 Punkte)
#Google #Messages (28 Punkte)
#Telegram (27 Punkte)
#WhatsApp (26 Punkte)
.....

#Threema (83 Punkte) #Session (80 Punkte) #SimpleX (79 Punkte) #Signal (78 Punkte) #Wire (64 Punkte) #Amazon #Wickr Me (61 Punkte) #Element ( #Matrix ) (56 Punkte) #Viber (39 Punkte) #Apple #iMessage (37 Punkte) #Google #Messages (28 Punkte) #Telegram (27 Punkte) #WhatsApp (26 Punkte) .........

@juliette Teens will just move to decentralised open source encrypted apps where they can't be policed. And I'm not talking about fediverse where individual instance owners can potentially be held accountable I mean stuff like SimpleX Cwtch or Briar

🚨 #SimpleXChat, a privacy-first messaging platform had its X account hacked to push a fake crypto-wallet site which copied official branding and asked users to ‘Connect Wallet’ stealing their funds.

@thefinalstrawradio
very in-depth podcast. excellent research. 🏴

i liked the call-out of #nostr as a #nazibar. 👍

i think the same could be said of #farright #transphobe #climatedenier #antivax #xenophobe #nationalist #TommyRobinson-fan lead dev of #simplex. check his #X posts if in doubt. 🇬🇧

you were briefly touching on the danger of #signal demanding #phonenumbers from users, but i don't think you sufficiently highlighted the real danger of it, especially because of the repeated bugs in #signal making hidden numbers visible to other users — and therefore also to cops who can unmask networks of activists with just one captured phone, despite settings promising that they're hidden! 📱⚠️

more info about those bugs and links to issue reports with #signal's response here:

@ambiguous_yelp

> SimpleX is also decentralised with multi-profile

but it doesn't have proper multi-device support besides the UI is pretty bad, not user friendly, not on the level of mainstream apps like #WhatsApp or #Telegram, see this #SimpleX screenshot for example

It looks like SimpleX has actually thought about the difficult problems with having multiple servers in a private messenger system.

I haven’t read in enough detail to be sure that they’ve succeeded in solving the problems, but they’re doing better than most of the other things I’ve looked at in this space. Signal could probably learn some lessons.

@miya Simplex has a lot of the same advantages of signal and is better in some ways

both are floss messengers and have quantum resistant end to end encryption

simplex has multi profile functionality and anonymous invite links so each dm can be like a burner phone with no single user id to connect you to all your dms

simplex is decentralised, while unofficial signal servers cant federate with the official servers simplex is built as a decentralised network of relays that can pass messages to each other for enhanced privacy and ip obfuscation kind of like tor, and its apparently very easy to run a simplex relay bc you dont need a huge media server files and messages are ephemeral its up to end users to archive or back up

Signal was attempted backdoored by the uk govt and was only saved by signal threatening to walk, if simplex is ever compromised or enshittified forks can be made without losing your contacts we aren't totally reliant on the official simplex relays unlike with signal

Another #HowTo, this time how to use #Signal on #Android without giving it broad media permissions.

Signal does not use the 2 possible secure methods of accessint photos that Android offers, and clones #Whatsapp in that regard.

By insisting on needing access to read all your images, while being a complex app connected to the internet, and the only official versions containing proprietary #Google #blobs.

Links:
- community.signalusers.org/t/46
- community.signalusers.org/t/55

Other messengers like #SimpleX, #Element, #ElementX, #Fluffychat, #Conversations, #Threema and more save themselves the effort and just use the builtin options, improving security by design and unnecessary code bloat.

So, how can I use Signal without trusting it with all my images?

1. Use the "Share" Portal.

That is the obvious one, and a very nice feature on Android. It allows to share any media to an application and giving it access to only that.

This also works across the #WorkProfile or #PrivateSpace and can be used by Apps like #SaveTo to transfer files.

The workflow is often slower than just using the media chooser portal, but it works. It is what I use since years.

2. Android hacks

But this is not all. Setting a profile picture or group profile picture does not work through the share portal. So we use a Feature specific to Androids Sandbox:

- All apps can save files to various default directories like Pictures, Movies, Music, Downloads, Documents; without having read access to it.
- And all apps can access files they themself saved there.

Combining these two features, you can send a picture to Signal and use the "Save locally" button to save it from within the app.

The result is that this picture will be visible in Signals internal gallery and can be selected for profile and group pictures.

Obvious downsides are
- it is a stupid workflow
- it duplicates images that you need to delete manually afterwards
- pictures might be compressed twice, losing quality

But for this very limited purpose, it is kinda fine.

Still, @signalapp please solve this very old issue!

#India is trying to impose SIM binding on messaging apps, which means apps will have to keep monitoring, the SIM card phone number where it is being used is the same as the one used for registration.

This is going to be another privacy issue for end users and a technical challenge for apps.
What about apps that doesn't use a phone number for registration like
#deltachat or #simplex? How would the government implement this rule?
The way governments think of solving problems most of the time are very bizarre, and this certainly is one of them.

#messaggisticacrittografata #crittografia #anonimato

@fishingdev @simplex

Yes I'll give them a try, thanks. I really like how your account isn't connected to a server, allowing you to jump or be part of many selfhosted servers, encrypting metadata is another win.

The support of JackDorcy & the outspoken anti-trans opinions of #simplex 's creator doesn't give much hope for a network effect for non-nazis though. An app that promotes pure privacy should have, at minimum, a freedom based viewpoint on gender identity, (do what you like).

#Simplex is a good alternative
#xmpp with OMEMO encryption too

But if you want to keep #signal you can use #molly in mobile. #Molly is a client alternative to signal that encrypt locally your messages.
