@timkrief @Mer__edith don't know that but you can find Molly on #FDroid. Is a fork from Signal apparently more focused in security and privacy. Still, their source code is not open and it is centralized.

Here is a comparison between instant messengers. There's not all the info but helps. I like more #XMPP or #SimpleX. If you like Matrix you should investigate some concerns about it before engaging.

I've just today found out that the founder of the project @epoberezkin expressed problematic views on social media.
Especially on his xitter account.

Now I have some questions for all involved with the project:
How do you and the rest of the team position yourself to his views?
How is the working climate and governance?

Furthermore an accusation was made that SimpleX recommended rooms with problematic political content.
How do you as a team position yourself regarding this rumour?
Is it true?
If yes how long has this been the case and is it still?
If it's been rolled back, why?

do you by chance know who else is involved in the project and how they position themselves in regards to the views of the founder?
because I think the tech is sound and a fork may be in order
to this end poaching the team for the good people among them could be necessary

I went looking for the problematic views of the #Simplex governing body you described and was able to find a very lucid response to fearmongering by Wired.com:

it's fine that one could hypothetically setup a non-fash relay and fork #simplex to be able to select this relay on initial setup.

however, since that hasn't happened yet, you're recommending "anti-vaxx, believing COVID-19 was a hoax, trans- and homophobia, climate denial" chat app.

let's not downplay fascism as merely "views."

@davidgerard why is #simplex anti recommended, I don't agree with the founders views either I think theyre dangerous but can't we just run our own relay servers and moderate them how we like? In terms of the protocol I don't think there is any messenger more secure against state adversaries

Requirements (exhaustive list):
1. Easy to sign up for for non computer touchers
2. Allows managing multiple identities on a single device
3. FOSS client (FOSS server optional but preferred)
4. E2EE
5. (Optional) Supports modern messenger features like replies, reactions, custom emoji, stickers, voice calls, etc.
There are a number of nice to haves like being self-hostable and chat history sync but I'm willing to compromise on those.

#Signal has great UX and phenomenal security but afaik fails completely at point 2
#Matrix and #Jabber / #XMPP fail point 1
#Whatsapp fails points 2 and 3
#Discord fails points 2, 3, and 4
SMS fails points 2, 3, 4, and 5
#Telegram fails point 2 and, if Soatok is to be believed, arguably 3 and 4 as well
#SimpleX looks good (I'm willing to trust its security) and is very easy to sign up for since there's no concept of an account but there's still some friction and it's dicey on point 1, also complete anonymity is often not desirable

#WhatsApp has introduced channels, music in status etc. and has made WhatsApp into another social media and less of a mainstream #messenger.

👿 The bad:

• It is targeting people who are not on social media to be hooked.

• I feel there's a possibility of WhatsApp removing encryption in future , now that its even less serious form of messenger.

😈 The good:

• It seems to be so distractive and cluttered that it makes #signal , #simplex and other #floss options more attractive.

It's not at all disconnected from the project itself. This defending of right wing bullshit under the guise of "defending free speech" appears to be inherent to SimpleX's philosophy. Of course, people will screech about "keep politicks out oaf mah softwayre!!"
