Bleeping cranes! And I don't mean of the avian variety, I'd be fine with those :ablobcatgrumpy: They make it look like the sunset was under construction!!
Coincidentally, taking these shots made me realize that maybe having red accentuation selected for the focus peaking isn't the smartest of choices of mine when there's so much natural fringing in red going on in the scene I'm shooting heh.

And here it is advertised in the late 60s. Looks sketchy, but these were fine lenses made by Kenko. They also were sold under Kenko and Soligor branding, probably more.
In the same issue, the staff reviewed a few of the new Soligor / AIC products, including the dual focal lenses. Overall, the 85mm seemed to have been most appreciated. Same finding on my end, the 85mm is the sharpest / easiest to focus. Available for many camera mounts including Fujica, except the 1.5x adapter which was more limited. Fit and finish was also praised, not surprising as the C/D line was their top tier

Continuing on the Dual Focal lens (unlike a varifocal, they stay in focus as the focal length changes), Soligor put a lot into these lenses, they thought this would be a game changer for them and the industry. They even did a full page advert in Popular Photography, extolling the virtues of the dual focal, especially the price. Weights seem a little off from what i measured for the Fujica mount. Maybe pentax mount version was lighter.

@990000 it doesn't operate quite like a zoom. Less parts. I like it and it takes fine pictures. Some reviewers seem to have had bad experiences. Not me, but I like most manual lenses for digital.
Here is a picture taken with the dual focal Soligor set at 85mm, on a Fujifilm XT-5 with IQ set at L 1:1 (square ratio, having fun with that ATM) 27 mega pixels.

Basically, the lens has a switch to go from 85mm on the "wide" side, and if you press the button, you can rotate the ring and convert it into a 135mm prime.
There has to be a catch, right? Can't have your cake and eat it too. And it comes in the form of minimum focusing distance; 2 meters. It is also a little harder to focus at 135mm than say a Fujinon 135mm 2.5 EBC prime lens. But, you can take a lot of shots with the flexibility of 2 focals.

It is a Soligor (AIC) dualfocal lens. MC means it is multicoated and C/D means computer design. The mount is a Fujica AX, so it can be used on Fuji Fujica AX-1, AX-3, STX1 etc, or with an adapter on most mirrorless cameras. It was made by Sun Optical in the early to mid 80s and sold as Sun and as Soligor. It did deliver better quality than a typical inexpensive zoom of the era, but not quite at the level of primes, especially fujinon.
Prime lens have a fixed focal length, say, 85mm. Zoom lens have a range of focal lengths, say, 70-140mm. Advantage zoom, you don't need to change lenses all the time as you need to get closer/farther. Disadvantage: They are bigger and heavier and in general their image quality is not as good and the bokeh is not as good looking in general.
But what is this, a lens that states 85mm + 135mm. Not a zoom. What is it?

#solarphotography So is this a #sun spot?
My second attempt at some solar photography. #Nikon #D90, 450mm #Soligor, f32, 100/s #astronomy
Japanese navy? Nah, just an #OpticalIllusion! Or is that what they'd want us to think?? 🙄 The second image shows #sunspots better. Taken seconds apart. Today's #sunset produced a bit cleaner red hues, the air seems cleaner, too.

Three faces of the same #sunset, at 50, 100 and 600mm, recpectively (might not be uploaded and displayed in that order).
The colours in these images were obtained with a custom RGB tone curve profile in Picture Style Editor. I'm including a screenshot of it. Colours themselves weren't changed (in the profile), albeit the mentioned custom profile is based on "Landscape" one that Canon cameras have built-in and I do find the latter to not be linear about it on the colour wheel. But, the posted photos are, technically, straight out of cam! As meaningful as that is with digital cameras 😜

I have often read that the 35mm (full-frame equivalent) is the perfect all-around focal length. On a 35mm camera, this focal length is wide enough for a scene to fill a frame, but long enough to isolate an individual subject. I had often also read that a 50mm prime lens, the ‘nifty fifty’, is the most useful and complete all-round lens. Before the advent of zooms, most film cameras were fitted with 50mm lenses. It has been written that Henri Cartier-Bresson, whom many photographers hold in high esteem, used a 50mm lens for most of his photography. 50mm lens is such a great addition to your camera bag because it's a versatile piece of glass. The point is that it is a great walk around or travel lens because it can help you photograph anything from your dog to mountains to macro subjects and everything in between. May photographers erroneously claim that the 50mm lens on a full-frame camera has an angle of view that closely matches the field of view of the human eye1. I shoot mostly digital (APS-C) but I own an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic II film camera. This searched an excellent, inexpensive 35mm prime lens an important one for me, and I only struck out once before finding something to be happy with. I'm getting a bit tired of saying "it's all-metal, substantial, great construction!" Just about every old lens I've come across would get high ranks for that. Nice features here: an A->M switch, so no modification necessary, smooth if a bit overly damped (hard to tell if it's just this example) focus with a beautiful throw of only over 180 degrees (allowing a useful distance scale), reasonably compact build and really nicely knurled focus and aperture rings. A bit of a ding here for a propensity to move the A->M ring when changing aperture and mounting/unmounting. But it's the pictures that matter. I use this lens primarily for street and landscape work but have done just about everything with it, including macro with extension tubes. It's held up exceptionally well in just about every department aside from a knack for flaring -- that convex front element catches light from all angles so that you might want a screw-on hood. I tend to use it around f/8 to f/11, which helps with sharpness, but even wide open. It's no slouch, though sharpness does fall off at [...] https://islandinthenet.com/soligor-35mm-wide-auto-m42/
