Thoroughly enjoyed every chapter of the new @marthawells #MurderbotDiaries book #SystemCollapse!

Just finished reading @marthawells’s seventh #murderbot book, #systemCollapse and, well, it was…affecting

Trying not to be too spoilery, the central character has been on a journey of emotional awakening throughout the series, and it takes a dark and somewhat upsetting turn in this new one, a direct sequel to the fifth novel.

Thoroughly enjoyable, if unsettling, stuff

I put System Collapse by @marthawells on my Christmas list, and now I'm feeling like a kid, staring at that wrapped hockey stick, stuck waiting for a whole month before I get to unwrap it....

But it's action interspersed with astute commentary on things like the pitfalls of dealing with someone who doesn't act in good faith in politics or how to know your own wants, preferences, likes and dislikes if you've been enslaved until recently. Commentary delivered in the unique Murderbot style, which is awesome to read.

It's such a good mixture that it feels like a comfort read despite engaging with hard topics.

That's #DecRecs for sure!

... and SecUnit aka Murderbot in charge of security. Only now, corporate representatives also show up, as does a separatist hidden colonist faction. And things go sideways fast as usual.

Maybe faster, because Murderbot isn't at its optimal functioning level - it's dealing with its feelings concerning its humans, the other "freed" SecUnit, Three, ART, and massive trauma, and it DOESN'T WANT TO.

That makes for fast-paced action for sure, as usual.

"System Collapse", the seventh installment in @marthawells's "Murderbot Diaries", doesn't disappoint - and that's high praise! The whole series manages to start excellent from story to story; maintaining a unique voice and style while developing its characters plausibly and significantly. That's no small feat!

We start off on our disputed and contaminated planet full of colonist factions that shouldn't be there, "Perihelion" aka ART and crew in negotiations...

"But since the thing that happened I don’t think I’ve had an emotion that wasn’t the visual equivalent of a wet blanket crumpled on a floor."

What a great image of depression. Reminds me of Bilbo's "like bitter scraped over too much bread". And wow, poor Murderbot.

"It was a problem with humans from Preservation, who thought of negotiation as “let’s figure out how to solve this problem in a way everyone is happy or at least okay with,” and there was a 96 percent chance that literally nobody else in the Corporation Rim, even across all the different human cultures that the different corporations operated under, thought of it like that."

Yes. Been there, done that, as every rational person in politics of any kind.

"I asked because the humans would bug me for the information; I was as indifferent to human gender as it was possible to be without being unconscious."

Are there any examples of societies who know about trauma, have therapy options available, and the traumatized person just... uses them, like they would a treatment for a wounded leg? Maybe grumping about healing so slowly, but using them anyway? Instead of all this "I don't need that" stuff.

We need positive role models, yo! Mental health is health too!
