Angkor travel style – most styles possible

Being on a bike, my style of exploring Angkor Park, meeting a completely different style.

Here at the West Gate of the Angkor Thom old capital, this beautiful Rolls Royce had brought their guests to visit. The kind elder couple had wanted to take this trip to Angkor for a long time. And they wanted a ride to make it very special.
I’d say they succeeded.

This gate is named Ta Kav gate in Khmer. I t is one of the four main entrances to Angkor Thom, out of the total of five gates int the capital built by the great king Jayavarman VII.
Angkor in Siem Reap, Cambodia, is truly a Kingdom of wonders. And some surprises.

There are several companies renting stylish and/or classic cars for people looking for that special travel experience in Siem Reap. Or planning a very special event. I have found several classic Mercedes, Bentleys, Italian Maseratis, and US Camaros and Mustangs. And Vipers.

Visit to an impressing off the main track citadel temple

Banteay Thom, the big (Thom) Citadel (Banteay), is 10 km north of Angkor Wat and 15 km out Siem Reap City limits. It is accessible by motorbike or a proper bike only.

This temple was built during the rule of Jayavarman VII "the Great" in early 1200s CE. There is one main entrance to the east, and a gate blockaded by debris to the west. Remains of a moat surrounds the old temple.

As a temple built by a mighty god king, it is of stately qualities including some very advanced arts and stone carvings.
After the anteroom and Gopuras, the main three towers are of impressive sizes. But in some need of restoration.

Being outside the main Angkor Park area, there is no need for an Angkor temple pass to visit. It is a truly quiet place with spots and details to study closely, without the queueing and crowds in the more famous temple from JVIIs reign.
Unfortunately, its solitude location means that the temple has been a target for looting into quite recent times.

Banteay Thom is surrounded by rice fields. Visiting during harvest season means meeting and surprise a lot of locals tending to their fields. Including the field where the young Khmer works, where you can listen to the latest in Khmer pop music.

That is not a bad thing. Kh-pop is patent, modern pop worth listen to. And makes a nice cultural contrast to the old Archaeological structure.

At the root of the Chenla kingdom

The three distinct Sambor Prei Kouk temple sites is an important archaeological area. The complex is just north of today’s Kampong Thom city in central Cambodia. It shows the bridging development from the Funan Civilisation into the Angkor Khmer Empire.

These temples were state temples in the old capital Isanapura of the Chenla kingdom.

The Funan state was a loosely organized confederation of cities and lesser kingdoms with large population centres and advanced technology. It was established about 2000 years ago and lasted for about 500 years. Funan covered southern part of today’s Cambodia, Viet Nam, Thailand and northern part of Malaysia.

The Chenla kingdom marks the rapid development of architecture, culture and society building into a unified centralised kingdom and culture. The Chenla kings reach north into today’s Laos, Isaan and Burma.

Isanapura was the core city of this pre-Angkor kingdom for 250 years, between 550 and 800 CE. The first writings in Khmer are found here, marking a continuous writing culture lasting into modern times.

By the end of the Chenla Kingdom unrest and pressure from outside slowly weakened and destabilized the realm. In northwest the Angkor Khmer Empire was declared in 802 CE to finally replace the Khmer Chenla Kingdom.

The Isanapura area is beautiful, with its fauna and flora adding to the experience. In 2017 Sambor Prei Kouk was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The mirror pond at Neak Poan temple

A morning bike to Neak Pean/Neak Poan (Khmer: ប្រាសាទនាគព័ន្ធ, “the entwined serpents”) is a fresh morning bike trip. The main temple tower dedicated to Avalokitesvara is this one in the mirror pond is worth the trip itself.

Neak Pean was built as a retreat and healing place at an artificial island. This island was put in the centre of a man made Baray/lake and water-reservoir.

In memory and honour of Dad
The surrounding Jayatataka Baray lays due east of the Preah Khan temple. This is the large temple complex J7 built in honour of his father.

Jayavarman VII had clear visions as mighty ruler of the Khmer Empire. This was the most beautiful of the more than 110 hospitals he initiated build for his people all over the core parts of his Empire. It is an architectural and water engineering marvel. Placed close by the large temple built in memory of his dad.

Tips for visits
Neak Pean is normally part of the Grand Circuit Tours of Angkor Park. It should be visited early after sunrise, before the soft breeze of the day breaks up the internal mirror pond tranquillity.

I saw the Buddha in the stone

The heritage from the old capital city of Chenla is still visible in the Kampong Thom area.

When it comes to the art of stonework is still kept in high regards in the modern day just south of Kampong Thom city.
Driving southeast along National Road 6 towards Kampong Cham, Skoun and Phnom Penh, you will drive along stone masonries and cement sculptures along the road. And you get to see how its done.

Sunset over the great port city

The province capital of Kampong Thom province is a nice stop halfway between Phnom Penh and Siem Reab. Over the years, the city has developed in a rapid tempo, and I find it more and more interesting to visit to check on the progress.
Cradle of the Khmer Empire
The area was an important capital in the pre-Khmer era, when the Funan culture and later the capital of the Chenla Kingdom lay down the basis for the great Angkor Empire.
Today it is a logical place to stay for the surrounding cultural and historic sites, including the UNESCO heritage site Prasat Sambor Prei Kouk. This was the state temples for Chenla Kingdom from 500 to 800 CE.
A hub for communication
The buses running from the capital via National Road 6 to Siem Reap and on to the Thai border often stops here. There are lodgings available from high end to hostels, markets, shops, restaurants and cafés.
Including a couple of really nice breakfast places, traditional or modern.
Notable sites are the city centre roundabout with the Independence monument, and the elephant statues fighting two tigers. On the north side of the river lays a large, see worthy pagoda.

Bei wielandleben

Am Samstag reisten wir mit Bekannten ins oberste Emmental: Unser Ziel war in Röthenbach, in der Nähe des Chuderhüsi, aber auch – für nicht ganz so Ortskundige wie mich auch – bei Langnau und Signau um die Ecke.

Da oben ist wielandleben zu Hause. Thom und Salome Wieland bewirtschaften nach Bio-Grundsätzen einen Bauernhof, bieten Menschen mit einer kognitiven und/oder psychischen Beeinträchtigung eine betreute Tagesstruktur – zum Teil verbunden mit betreutem Wohnen.

Bei wielandleben kann man Seminare abhalten, Hochzeiten und andere Feste feiern, Apéros veranstalten – und sogar, wenn man sich getraut, eine steile Treppe zu überwinden – im Dachstock des nebenan gelegenen Speichers übernachten.

An diesem schönen Flecken Erde waren wir also zu Besuch. Der Anlass am Samstag war ein „Eröffnungs-Special“. Die Eventküche war auf einen guten Stand gebracht worden, und diese wunderschöne Küche spielte denn grundsätzlich auch die Hauptrolle bei dem Fest.

Selbstverständlich gab es auch verschiedenste Speisen mit Zutaten aus eigenem Anbau und eigener Verarbeitung: Hummus, verschiedene Saucen, Brötli, Linsensalat, Wurst und Käse, sowie Meringue, Schokomousse, Nussgipfel und vieles mehr.

Thom, Salome und ihrem Team war gelungen, was nicht selbstverständlich ist: Man fühlte sich von Beginn weg wie zu Hause.

Framing the temple to the tree

Ta Prohm temple is often refered to as the the trees of life temple.

It was only proper to find a way of making the temple frame oe of the famous tall trees.

Several of the Banyan trees in this temple served as background in the Tomb Raider movie, making them instant, yet woody, celebrities.

Ta Prohm (Khmer: ប្រាសាទតាព្រហ្ម, "Ancestor Brahma") is the modern name of the structure. Originally it was called Rajavihara (Khmer: រាជវិហារ, "royal monastery"). It was built during the reign of the great ruler Jajavarman VII. Originally a monastery and university, and built to honour the kings mother, with the gates each side honouring the kings brother and his guru.

Senators are privately (and publicly) saying they hope Donald Trump

Why it matters:
None of them know — or it's a damn good secret — whether the felon-candidate will make an endorsement.

But senators and advisors fear a Trump intervention could turn the secret ballot leader election into a public feud.

"I said, 'Sir, if I was you, I would stay out of the race, because there's no win for you in this,'" Sen. #Markwayne #Mullin (R-Okla.) told us about a recent call with Trump.

"I hope not," said Sen. #Thom #Tillis, when asked if he thinks Trump will weigh in. "I think outside influence could be problematic."

Between the lines:
This the first real competitive Senate GOP leadership race of the Trump-era,

McConnell has had a tumultuous relationship with the pussy-grabber.

The top two candidates
— Sens. John #Thune and John #Cornyn
— each have had rocky relationships with Trump.
However, they have worked to make amends.

After Jan. 6, Thune denounced Trump and initially endorsed Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) for president.

Cornyn has said the GOP needed to move on from Trump.

Senate sources do not talk about Sen. Rick #Scott's (R-Fla.) bid as seriously as Thune's or Cornyn's, though he has a good relationship with Trump.
"Sen. Scott is focused on dramatically changing the way the Senate operates and creating a member-driven process," according to spokesperson McKinley Lewis.

Sources often describe Thune as the likely favorite,
though they say not to discount how much Cornyn's long history of hard-dollar fundraising for Senate campaigns means to people.

Cornyn told us it's been a few weeks since he spoke with Trump about the leadership race.

But he visited Mar-a-Lago a couple months ago "to talk about planning for the future,"
adding they've been "visiting with some of the transition folks."

Mullin said Trump "likes" Thune despite their rocky past.

The Oklahoma Republican has publicly backed Thune.

Some sources suspect there could be a late entry:
NRSC Chair Steve #Daines (R-Mont.) is the most-floated name.

The bottom line:
There's not a lot of incentive for senators benefiting from both Thune and Cornyn's aggressive fundraising efforts to commit too early.

"If one of them felt that they really had a majority, I think they would not be shy about saying that,
but I don't think anybody does," Hawley said.
