Red & white terraced travertine mineral springs are formed through a fascinating geological process involving water, minerals & time when groundwater, heated by geothermal activity deep within the Earth, rises to the surface carrying dissolved calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) & other minerals. As the water emerges & cools, it releases carbon dioxide (CO₂) causing the calcium carbonate to solidify into travertine, a type of limestone. This process creates iconic white terraces often seen in these formations. The red or orange hues in some travertine terraces like this one, & rarely visited one a mile from white Pamukkale, Turkey terraces, come from the presence of iron oxide & other minerals also dissolved in the water. These minerals oxidize upon contact with air, giving the terraces their warm, reddish tones. Over time, the continuous flow of mineral-rich water builds up layers of travertine, forming the stepped, terraced structures that are both visually stunning and scientifically intriguing. The geological activity that drives these springs is linked to tectonic plate movements which create fractures in the Earth’s crust, allowing heated groundwater to rise.

Rather gruesome but apparently quite common (outside of concrete floors in New Jersey), #Travertine limestone frequently contains #fossils: “This naturally raises a broader question: How many other people have installed travertine with #hominin fossils inside?”

Foster + Partners flanks Istanbul Apple Store with travertine stone walls

Architecture studio Foster + Partners has designed an Apple Store in the heart of Istanbul that is flanked with two stone walls.

Located on Istanbul's Bagdat Caddesi, a busy shopping destination in the centre of the city, the store is technology company Apple's third retail location in the city. Its first store in the city opened in 2014 in the Zorlu Centre.

Top: the Foster + Partners-designed store is located on a busy shopping street in Istanbul. Above: the store has a glazed facade. The photo is courtesy of Apple.

Foster + Partners set the store back from the street and built a column-free, two-level structure with a fully glazed facade. From street level, the store appears as though it is a single-storey building topped with an overhanging roof.

The interior is flanked by two large walls built from local travertine stone while floor-to-ceiling glass connects the two walls to form the store's facades.

The store was flanked by two travertine stone walls and has a column-free interior

The entrance to the store was placed at the centre of the glazed wall and was marked by an illuminated Apple logo.

Aksaray Yaylak Granite stonework, used across the street's paving, was continued through to the interior of the store to create a "gentle transition" into the space as well as a visual connection with the street.

A staircase leads visitors down into a double-height space at the rear. Photo courtesy of Apple.

Three rows of tables were placed on top of the street-paved floors and recessed display units were built into the travertine walls hosting Apple's latest products.

Glimpses of a tree-lined view at the rear of the store draws visitors to a large double-height space that is framed by a rear, 9.7-metre glazed wall.

A large stone staircase, also made from local travertine, was built along the right side of the store and leads visitors to the lower level that houses a forum-style space.

The double-height space looks out onto the tree-lined gardens that surround the store, while a concealed lower level I located under the ground floor space.

There is a second floor below the street level

Publicly accessible green spaces were organised along three sides of the store, with the rear garden enveloped by a tall green hedge.

The building was topped with a green roof to insulate the interior as well as a rainwater harvesting system for the irrigation of plants and the recycling of used water.

Courtyards surround two sides of the store. Photo courtesy of Apple.

Foster + Partners has designed numerous Apple Stores. These include a store in Downtown Los Angeles within an abandoned 1920s movie theatre and the conversion of the Palazzo Marignoli into a store that highlights$ its historic details.

Concrete and travertine form minimalist chapel in northern Mexico by WRKSHP

This minimalist chapel outside of Monterrey in northern Mexico by WRKSHP was designed with a limited palette of materials that allow natural light to define the spacious interiors.

Fuego Nuevo chapel was completed earlier this year, after the firm was commissioned directly by the congregation of El Uro, on the outskirts of Monterrey. The area is set at a high altitude, surrounded by the Sierra Madre mountain range.

The chapel is reached via an elevated plaza

WRKSHP was initially engaged for the project in 2014, and spent the subsequent years working closely with the community to design the 1,265-square-metre chapel.

"Many of the church's resources have come from donations from parishioners and some foundations, so we also aimed to work with low-maintenance materials that could age with dignity," explained the Monterrey-based architects. "When the project was presented to the community, it was very well received."

It is located on the outskirts of Monterrey

The project is laid out on two levels. A partially sunken lower floor is accessible directly from the street, and contains a multi-purpose room and the ossuaries at the back of the space, which are meant to be the most private areas of the building.

Above the multi-purpose room, the architects created an elevated plaza that worshippers reach via a long ramp along the facade. "Here, an evergreen oak was planted that was donated by the community," they explained.

The facade is made from board-formed concrete

The entrance to the chapel is from this new plaza. The main facade is made of board-formed concrete, a material that references Monterrey's industrial heritage.

The nave is a double-height space that is defined by the deep structural beams that span the width of the chapel. This design allows for a layout without intermediate columns.

"[The structure] remains as bare and heavy elements [that] are constantly repeated, generating a rhythm of solids and voids that allows natural light to play its role as a protagonist," said WRKSHP.

Between each column, tall glass walls offer views of the surrounding mountainous landscape.

Structural beams span the width of the chapel

The beams, meanwhile, also integrate clerestory windows that bring even more light to the interiors.

The altar was designed in collaboration with local craftsman Alfredo Zertuche. A large black slab of Monterrey marble was sourced from a nearby quarry in Cerro del Topo Chico, and is backed by a curved wall of wooden slats made of walnut.

A marble altar is positioned at one end of the nave

Concrete and travertine feature in other religious buildings, including a church topped with a concrete dome by Atelier Štěpán in Brno and a church that was built as part of a larger complex in Castel di Lama, Italy, and is modeled after traditional Italian town centres.

Arched travertine wall carves up Greetings From Rome apartment by 2XJ

A structural stone wall separates the social and private spaces within this two-storey family apartment in the old town of Vilnius, Lithuania, designed by local studio 2XJ.

Located in the city's Užupis neighbourhood, the 140-square-metre apartment occupies the second and third-floor attic space of a three-storey apartment building.

2XJ designed the apartment around the structural stone wall at its centre

The apartment, which belongs to a young family who split their time between Vilnius and Vienna, previously had a "complex" layout dominated by a structural stone wall that ran the length of the apartment.

Punctuated by three arches on the ground floor, this wall reminded the architects of the Colosseum in Rome.

"It became a bit of a humorous point," 2XJ architect Martina Kriauciuniene told Dezeen. "This complicated and immovable wall became known as the Colosseum."

The studio chose a neutral palette of white, natural wood and travertine

As it was one of the apartment's main structural walls it could not be removed so the studio decided to turn it into a central feature by cladding it in slabs of Italian travertine "just like the real Colosseum".

This is also what led the architects to give the project its tongue-in-cheek name: Greetings From Rome.

2XJ clad the central wall in slabs of Italian travertine

"Our main goal was to enhance the feeling of the old town in the interior by modern means, and the arch motif and the stone wall served this purpose perfectly – it became the axis of the project," said Kriauciuniene.

"We decided to highlight this wall and create the home around it, to separate the house into active and restful spaces. We knew that if we solved the wall issue properly, the project would be a success."

It divides the public and private spaces on the lower level

On a practical level, the wall separates the social and private spaces on the lower floor by dividing the plan into two zones – a main living area with an open plan kitchen, living and dining area on one side and two children's bedrooms and bathrooms on the other.

From the main living space, the owners can access a small home office that can be closed off with sliding doors, as well as a large terrace with a view of Vilnius's baroque churches.

Built-in storage is incorporated into a hallway that runs between the children's bedrooms and the stone wall.

The second-floor landing area houses a small library

The apartment's upper level houses the primary bedroom, a small bathroom and a landing area that functions as a library for the owners' large collection of books.

To complement the wall, the architects chose a neutral palette of white, natural wood and travertine throughout the apartment.

Travertine accents also feature in the bedrooms

The staircase that links the two floors is divided into two parts, with a "monumental" wood section at the base and the rest made from white-coloured steel.

"The monumental part has a connection with other objects, such as the dining table and console," explained the studio.

"The upper part was designed to create a feeling of lightness and to save space. All of these elements create a link with the main stone wall."

The staircase is divided into a wood and a white steel section

The arch motif is repeated in smaller details throughout the apartment such as the custom door handles, dining table and other curved furniture.

Elsewhere in Vilnius, a number of studios have used similar techniques to modernise old, 19th-century apartments. ŠA Atelier inserted bright white and natural wood partitions to divide the space in one family home, while in another interior designer Kristina Lastauskaitė-Pundė turned the existing arched doorways into a central feature.
