Exchange of genetic diversity between species accelerates evolutionary adaptation in songbirds phys.org/news/2025-10-exchange science.org/doi/10.1126/scienc

"Changes in a single gene led to white plumage on the throat and back of the Balkan #wheatear... These variants were then passed on to the North African wheatear through crossbreeding... The exchange of genetic information across species boundaries gives rise to new combinations of genetic modules. This can help species adapt quickly to new conditions"

I met this little idiot today, who kept to the footpath all the way to the beach, despite the human-sized human walking down it towards him.

A juvenile Wheatear on a dusty footpath watches me over its shoulder. The bird has a grey back with a band of black edging its wings and continuing into its tail. It has an orange-brown throat and its front and underside is white or pale grey.A juvenile Wheatear is trying to land on a gorse bush. Its wings are a blur, and the white patch on its rump is clearly shown. The gorse is mostly green, but with some dead-looking brown bits.A juvenile Wheatear has let me get far too close while eating some inidentified invertebrate. The bird is seen here more from the side, showing a little glint of sunlit reflected in its eye.

Hopping about amongst the Puffins at The Wick on Skomer Island on Sunday was another bird: a female Northern Wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe). The name we use for this white-rumped Summer visitor is derived from the Old English words for ‘white’ and ‘arse’!

Nature

Photo of a female Northern Wheatear, a species of songbird, standing in a fairly erect posture in an area of low vegetation (mainly Mayweed which is not yet in flower). The bird is facing towards the right. Her beak and her eye are black, with a thick, blackish stripe running between them and extending, in a thinner line, for a short distance behind the eye. The top of her head, and her back, are a pale brownish-grey, and the wing feathers are a dark brownish-black. Her cheek is brown, her throat whitish, her chest light brown, and her belly white. Her legs are dark grey (as are her feet, but in this image they are hidden in the vegetation).

To finish the day we figured there was time left so headed over to RSPB Snettisham as it was close.

The sun was setting as we arrived at the lagoons. I saw my first oyster catcher, it walked about 2m along the edge of an island and promptly tucked its head away and went to sleep! I was so amused I forgot to take a photo. Walking back to the car a Wheatear perched on a post.

As a beast of a #levante wind kicks in and closes the departure gate for soaring #Birds in The #Straits itÂŽs #Wheatear fest down-town!

Both adult male Western Black-eared and Northern #Wheatears in their finest splendour arriving at the #migration party!

Black Storks, Black Kites, Booted and Short-toed Eagles and European Honey Buzzards wait for calmer conditions as they form swirling mesmerising masses over the heads of our guests 😊

As the weather is less than clement, I'm browsing through my camera from yesterday. Here's another Wheatear looking most fine. They really were everywhere I looked.

So many of these little birds on my walk today on #dartmoor.
Merlin and Google Lens tell me they are an adult and juvenile Wheatear. They were certainly brave, shouting at me from only a few feet away.
