I came across this Hoary bat today, at the end of my hike. It was flipped on its back, shivering on the cold & wet pavement.
I carefully flipped it over as it hissed at me like a cat and bared its cute little fangies.
Then it took a few steps and flew off like a little air force hedgehog. #hiking

Have any #Linux users tried this? It's called Swiss File Knife, and is a #FOSS utility available via Sourceforge.
It contains 100 command line utilities of various types.
It downloads to Linux as a single binary and is pretty easy to run and use so far.
Kind of fascinating, too, that it's cross-platform...
I haven't used it much but I'm wondering if it might be simpler than some similar Linux utilities.

๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ A view of its user interface used with tons of selected games. It presents 4 buttons (Edit, Backup, Restore, Play), a menu (File, Setup, Tools, Help), and various control displays (the path of the game, a duration, the date and time of the last save, ...). A large window also shows the status of the current saves (changelog).

๐Ÿ“š๏ธ Game Backup Monitor is a libre, multi-platform tool for managing/backing up the user's video game backup data (or for monitoring any application on the player's PC). It detects the launch of supported games, then once the game is finished, it automatically backup and compress (in 7-Zip format) the saved games. It also supports DOSBox, ScummVM and Wine. It can be used on a single computer or multiple computers to effectively add cloud support to any game or application. It can also automatically launch other software when a monitored game is detected, track the number of hours and number of sessions of a game.

@EcksDy NP...rolling for sure right now. Especially if using Wine, Proton, & current-gen games.
Using stable for gaming is far more appropriate for power users who need a stable system overall (IMO).

2024-10-28

@EcksDy issues with some games except 1) if I search there are usually workarounds to try, and 2) big, big difference if using stable distro like Ubuntu 22.04 today vs. Rolling release distros.
The distro is basically the OS where quality gaming on Linux is concerned.

Are there any movies featuring pets that use those little floor-buttons to talk?
That is such a fascinating world... I'm told there's a dog that used their buttons to express a wish to be human ๐Ÿฅบ

Every once in a while I think "I should learn all the esoterica of Bash scripting in the same way I walked the fascinatingly detailed path of the Windows Batch File, as a kid!"

Then, I push a bit further down the Bash route, and the comparison is EXACTLY like those threads where someone asks "what's another Linux game like 'Torchlight'" and the top suggestion is...Nethack...

(Not bashing Nethack!)

I really love scripting langs like ABS-lang.org and the like, but also, Bash is just a thing that's all over the place...so it's good to be fluent...

So, mobile devices now have: Crash detection, disaster alerts, satellite SOS, quick emergency dial. Now, we see AI & image detection, too. This makes me wonder:

How many years until your device will be able to end a physical altercation, or defend you in a physical attack?

Against animal, human, ...bot? ...drone?

What will the mechanism(s) be? Cave brain says "typical physical weaponry" of course, but what else, or what creative combination might do it?

Or, will the device decide what the mechanism of defense will be, based on its physical orientation to the activities at hand, and the type of confrontation it can sense?

What would a false-positive look like??

Consider, also: It has been decades since we saw a meaningful disruption in self-defense tech.

So, there has been a massive regression from the mean, in math terms.

What will it look like when that rubber band metaphorically snaps back into place?

Would you pay extra for a device for a family member, that could meaningfully improve their chances of surviving a dangerous situation? (Or would you wait until it's standard?)

Hmm?

@bkahn welcome! Just some quick answers from my experience:
1) This is easiest if...you can define your goals and what a boatload means to you. Absolutely doable, even more so on a budget the more time passes, apparently (tech evolution & market dynamics).
But you should write a simple specification for how much you want to spend and what you expect to get out of that. It's a good exercise for anybody getting into any hobby....

2) Yes, but as with any hobby it's going to depend on their psychology and interest levels in the related topics. Some may not be interested in the same areas of ham radio you are, and ham radio is such a broad hobby that there are just thousands of sub-hobbies within it.
For example maybe you are interested in local volunteering for marathons or cycling competitions, and they are interested in space communications, or digital modes and digital communications.
But since they can communicate as your station third party, it's pretty fun to invite them or incentivize them to pick up your radio, and put your call sign out there sometimes... under your supervision of course.

I would mention here that this is also a great opportunity for you to get a GMRS license and actually talk to your family using the advantage of that family license if you're in the US. But most countries have some kind of a way to use simple walkie-talkie style communications and with GMRS there are even repeaters you can use to get across the country.

3) You're right in that there is a bit of difference between the exams and real life, so to speak, but the exams are really great as learning tools.
I am so glad that I took the time to study. It was a free education.
Regarding learning via practice: Going to local events, like meetups and volunteer events even as a beginner is well advised. You will learn a lot and the people there will be generally very patient with you.
But you can also find a lot of this type of content on YouTube, with some very gentle tutorials on how to communicate in basic situations, etiquette, etc.
Also, it's never too late to have an Elmer!
All the best of luck to you. ๐Ÿ‘

What a cool astrophotography winner in the "People and Space" category.

Oh look, that's the International Space Station in front of the Sun! (Credit: Tom Williams)

"This dramatic image serves as a powerful reminder of humanityโ€™s ongoing presence in space. The photographer has done a great job in perfectly timing this shot so that the International Space Station is silhouetted against the backdrop of the Sunโ€™s eastern solar limb.

"The photograph beautifully showcases the dynamic and active nature of the Sun, bringing it to life in a captivating way. Yet among that, your eye is permanently fixed on the tiny human-made spacecraft making its way across, emphasizing its significance amid the grandeur of the Sun. Itโ€™s a worthy winner of this category."

And again it is time I frighten myself by reading Robert Heinlein's anthology Revolt In 2100. Specifically the appendix "Concerning Stories Never Written: Postscript". (1953).

It is about how an evangelist name Nehemiah Scudder won a USA presidential election sometime between the year 2000 and 2025 and established a religious dictatorship that lasted for the next fifty years.

It frightened me when I first read it in the 1970s, and it keeps getting worse with each passing year.

Reading Wikipedia lately...

Have you ever noticed how some Wikipedia articles seem to be in a hurry to label certain topics as 'pseudoscience'?

Like they're trying to give you a heads up, just in case you were thinking of taking things too seriously.

Sometimes, I just want to learn about a topic without being told what to think about its scientific appeal. I might be curious about the history of a particular idea, or how it's perceived by different cultures.

Or maybe just "where did the name come from?"

I don't necessarily need a verdict on its legitimacy.

It's almost as if Wikipedia is trying to prove its own scientific rigor by being the first to call out pseudoscience?

And speaking of that...

Isn't Wikipedia a form of pseudoscience?
