This past week we had wind gusts at 60mph+, strong enough to blow a 24 lb paver off the top of the beehive, then of course the insulation and telescoping lid. This is our strongest hive so it was devastating to find. Fortunately the inner cover stayed on and they were in the bottom box with 2 full medium supers on top. I quickly put them back together, adding an additional paver this time and listened with my ear pressed against the hive. To my relief they were still humming and not frozen to death. We have high 60 degree days forecasted this week. I'm eager to see who all comes out for a cleansing flight.

I am working on a rudimentary layout of an apothecary and pollinator garden I'm planning for next spring. I'm choosing plants that I know I enjoy working with when making tinctures, salves, and teas, but also plants that I know will be a good resource for our honey bees and the native pollinators. I'm also choosing plants that will not escape or threaten any of the native flora around us.

I couldn’t live without honey, not just for using it, but for honouring & remembering my long dead beekeeper grandparents. “John, you need a teaspoon a day to keep you healthy.” ☺️

One of our hives has swarmed. I've not had a fall swarm before and I am wondering if this is because I did a combine back in August, making it very robust and therefore happy to buzz off late in the season. I'm now left with a small cluster on about 5 frames in a deep box. They have no brood but there are 3 emergency queen cells, one of which is capped and one of which looks either chewed or torn open (the tip is missing). So now I have to decide whether to combine this group with a stronger hive or overwinter as a small Nuc - assuming a queen makes an appearance in the next week or two. There's no drones to speak of so what a virgin queen will do right now is beyond me. My main goal at this point in what has been a rather difficult beekeeping season (looking at you climate change weather whiplash) is to have at least 1 robust hive come spring that we can make a couple of splits out of.

Bridgend beekeeper named finalist in BBC Countryfile Young Countryside Champion Award 2025

Dafydd Pett, 22, launched The Welsh Honey Company as a teenager after inheriting his grandfather’s hives. What began as a handful of colonies in the back garden has grown into a thriving national brand, supplying honey to farm shops, butchers and delis across Wales and the UK.

The BBC Countryfile award, part of the broadcaster’s annual Food and Farming Awards, celebrates young people making a difference in rural life. Dafydd was chosen from thousands of nominees across the UK.

From back garden hives to national recognition

Dafydd’s journey into beekeeping began at the age of 11, when his grandfather, Mike Pett, introduced him to the craft. After Mike’s death in 2017, Dafydd inherited 30 hives and decided to continue the family tradition.

“I realised early on that bees are far more than just producers of honey,” he said. “They are integral to pollination, vital to biodiversity, and essential to the survival of many plant species. Beekeeping wasn’t just a hobby for me — it was a responsibility.”

By 17, Dafydd had formally launched The Welsh Honey Company, balancing his growing business with GCSEs and A‑levels. He also represented Wales at the International Meeting of Young Beekeepers in Slovakia in 2019, and now serves as a trustee and youth representative for the Bridgend Beekeepers Association.

Awards and advocacy

The Welsh Honey Company has won multiple accolades, including Welsh Honey Enterprise of the Year in 2023 and 2024, and several Great Taste Awards. Dafydd has also built a following through YouTube tutorials and school visits, encouraging more young people to take up beekeeping in an industry where the average age is 65.

“Breaking into the honey industry is extremely difficult as the big businesses have dominated for decades,” he explained. “But I knew I had to think outside the box, use my youth to my advantage, and show people that Welsh honey can compete on quality and sustainability.”

Looking ahead

Now marking his 11th year as a beekeeper, Dafydd says he is focused on expanding sustainably while staying true to his roots.

“We’ve always been committed to working with nature, not against it,” he said. “The future of Welsh honey is bright, and we’re just getting started.”

The winner of the BBC Countryfile Young Countryside Champion Award 2025 will be announced later this year.

It may not look like much but at a time when the NBU (National Bee Unit) is warning of starvation the #bees in this hive managed to gather an estimated 50lbs of #honey.

While a commercial #beekeeper might take all the honey. We took nine frames off and extracted 21lbs of honey, returning at least another 5lbs of honey in the wet frames. They have time to complete their winter stores.

Total food miles about 60 yards.
