My steaming ads, as a 40 year old #childfree woman, have recently changed from diapers and baby care to just straight up Michigan Right to Life?

@wearywulf terminal optimism, plus a little bit of instinctual desire, I think, in my case?

To unpack that:

I'm a bit neuroatypical and I don't believe peer pressure was a factor for me & my wife, but instinct definitely was. I think a large part of me wanted to have kids in order to create a bountiful & safe home for them to grow up in and then see what they choose to become. For sure, with the way the world is there's going to be plenty of pain in their lives, and I don't even want to overly shield them from any painful truths.

Quite possibly it's arrogance to believe I can provide even a decent life for them amidst the polycrisis, or that by raising them gently and trying to give them good examples they can grow up to be people that will contribute to a brighter future (and there's certainly a risk of me displacing my activist impulses onto them in ways unhealthy for then, me, and the world). Certainly I respect the logic of those who chose to be #childfree, especially in the toxic natalist society we live in.

I guess I believe two things (though I admit they could be wrong and gave respect for those who believe differently):

1. I'm the future, whether 10's, 100's, or 1000's of years from now, there will exist for at least some time a more harmonious and joyful human society, and all kinds of activism between now and then will meaningfully contribute to bringing it about.
2. Even in times of great suffering, the beauty and joy in the world makes life worth it.

Point #1 helps me believe that both my life & my children's lives can have rich purpose, even if that's only a fractional contribution to the seeds of a far-future meditopia (and of course, it should be much more and more immediate than that). Point #2 helps me believe that my children won't regret my choice to have them, even if their lives are blighted by intense depravation.

To be clear, I'm not pro-natalist, and I not posting this to try to refute you. Rather, your message inspired me to question my decisions, and I felt doing so out loud and I response to you might be useful out productive for some people. Apologies if I've overstepped.

[P] I sometimes wonder how people can have kids and... It's ignorance coupled with the arrogance of neurotypical hiverarchy, the infinite arrogance. I mean, nature is having a hell of a time creating something that can break down carbon-fluorine bonds and it's in your blood, muscles, and brain—welcome to Planet Teflon, whete life is plastic and it isn't fantastic. I won't bring a kid into this, to get sick as the world dies.

Bringing more humans into a planet already teetering under environmental collapse and filled with billions of suffering beings simply adds to the burden of suffering. We especially reject the idea that a woman’s value lies primarily in childbearing, or that one must have children to live a complete or meaningful life. These are socially constructed narratives that have pressured people (especially women) into unwanted or harmful reproductive roles for millennia.

"It's so boring reading to my child"

Why the fuck did you even have children if spending time with them is such a chore? Just doing what everyone else were doing were you?

Kids know when you don't want to be around them....

Same.

Late Stage Capitalism is what's killing birthrates, we refuse to breed more humans for you to exploit, the Masquerade is over for most of us, we'd sooner Eat The Rich than breed.

Also, this freaky Straight natalist business is exactly why us Queers kick off about the assumptions of what is 'Normal' in your society...

Speaking for myself, if I wanted to unlock this conundrum, I'd look
elsewhere. Are birthrates going down because of declining living standards?
Or to put that more simply: can anybody afford a baby? If we wanted to
create societies conducive to large families, would we need to rediscover
ambition in public services, and generosity in state support? Is there a
pressing global pessimism, rooted in real and observable catastrophes such
as inaction on the climate crisis and impotence in the face of conflict? Could
it be that the world increasingly looks like an unlovely place for an infinitely
precious and fragile human?

This is exactly it, looking after humans is too much hassle, a dog you don't have to explain the horrible, horrible world to....

“contrary to popular belief, only a small minority of dog owners actually treat their pets like human children. In most cases, dog parents choose dogs precisely because they are not like children.”

I don't know how it came up yesterday but one of SO's older relatives started talking about pets, and SO and I are thinking of getting a cat (we are still though waiting out the huge renovations here, because we don't want to put our pet through that). He was suggesting that it's a lot of responsibility and you lock yourself up a bit/can't be so flexible. The hypocrisy is that he would be over the moon and not give it a second thought or doubt us if we decided to become parents.. 🙄 #childfree

Medical science is in fact terribly biased against women because the standard baseline is almost always a typical male body
