A Comma Butterfly perched on an Oak leaf, with wings fully open. He or she is facing towards the left side of the image; we see him or her from the side and at an angle – if there was a line drawn connecting the bottom left and the top right corners of the picture, the leading edges of the forewings would more or less follow part of that line. The wings, which have rather jagged outer edges, are an orangey-brown colour, with dark blotches and some paler coloured ones too. The body is hairy, and brown in colour, with hints of green on the thorax. The antennae are dark, and the thickened ends have whitish tips.

Es ist schwierig, Schmetterlinge zu fotografieren. Sie haben einen ausgeprägten Fluchtreflex und bevor man die Kamera richtig in Position gebracht hat, sind sie schon wieder weg.
Umso glücklicher war ich, als dieser C-Falter sich überhaupt nicht stören ließ und sich in verschiedenen Posen zeigte. So konnte ich die schönen Flügel einfangen.

🇬🇧 Photographing butterflies is never easy. They have a very pronounced flight response and before I can get the camera in the right position, they're gone. I was all the happier that this comma butterfly was not disturbed at all and was happy to be photographed in various poses. So it was possible to take a picture of its beautiful wings.

Newly emerged from its pupa, a Comma butterfly feeds on a decaying apple. The Comma is orange with black spots, and edges of wings are ragged, with comm shapes at each tip. The apple is also orange.

At last a beautiful Comma sighted, the first of the summer brood.
I’ve read its numbers made a come-back in UK over the last 50 years, as it changed its preferred plant from hops to nettles. It’s one of the Polygonia butterflies, a name which means ‘many angles’ - as we can see on the edges of its wings.
