Lewis the Sheltie checks in to make sure I am still with them on a walk through the woods.

Looking down a winding dirt hiking trail in the high desert. This trail curves left and right as it maintains a relatively even elevation while skirting around features of the mountain. In the distance the trail curves to the left and goes out of frame in front of a cliff. The dominant colors are light tan and dark green, vegetation is mostly desert scrub bushes and small trees. A few dead and/or fallen trees are visible.

To live in the pacific northwest is to be aware of the cataclysmic forces that shaped our landscape. We are surrounded by the evidence in towering volcanoes, basalt cliffs, cinder cones, lava fields, and the coulees and gorges carved by the Missoula floods.

When I visit these places the veneer of civilization is peeled back, I see the depth of power in the earth, and feel awe, wonder, and a sense of my place in time and space. I am a momentary spark in the vast story of the world.

Break a leg for #FootpathFriday the 13th 🤞

I met three British tourists at this spot, trying to navigate this part of the #trail in jeans and trainers. They were debating whether to turn around and take the bus instead. I told them it's a beautiful route, but there are plenty of sections just as slippery as this one. The fittest of them took a tumble, and after seeing that, the others decided to slide down the steps on their bums instead. I didn't stick around to see if they turned back, as I was heading toward the #Bastei rock formation in the opposite direction. Either way, climbing back up those steps would have been quite the challenge. 😅
