コロラド州ボールダー市では、ソーダ地方税（soda tax）を財源に、新鮮な野菜や果物を購入できるクーポンを希望者に配っている。家族2人に対して月に40ドル分のクーポンがもらえる。このFruit and Veg Boulderプログラムのゴールは、新鮮な野菜や果物が高くて買えない家庭だけを対象にしたものではなく、住民全体の栄養価の高い食品の摂取を推進することだ。連邦政府にもいくつかのプログラムがあるが、貧困家族だけでなく、不法移民だろうと希望者は誰でもクーポン券を受け取れるのが特長。

＊米国ではファストフードや清涼飲料水のほうが手軽で安上りだったり、低所得者の多い地域には新鮮な食物を扱う店が少ないなど、健康的な食生活を送るための問題が多い。日本でもコンビニで済ませてしまうという層が増えているように感じるが、成人病や成人病予備軍を減らすための公衆衛生の施策として、このようなプログラムがあってもいいのでは？　長期的には医療費の抑制につながるはずだ。
