💾 Ah, the riveting saga of 'Linux #Tidbits and Collecting Pebbles'—a tale of one person's journey through the mythical land of #GNU/Linux, where every pebble collected is a #kernel #recompiled. 🕵️♂️ Prepare yourself for a labyrinth of #UNIX #philosophies that somehow still manage to leave you... searching for the point. 🤷♂️

New Linux-libre versions are out: 6.17.7-gnu, 6.12.57-gnu, and 6.6.116-gnu! The @fsf has covered almost all our expenses since the very beginning - and that’s truly something to quack about! If you love software freedom, please consider donating to the FSF: https://www.fsf.org/ #FreeSoftware #SoftwareFreedom #GNU #Linux #LinuxLibre
When you are enthusiastic about a non-enshittified piece of software and want people who don't yet know how to use it, to use it - here are some key points I am taking away from this discussion:
Spell out every acronym or shorthand (like OS for operating system or doc for documentation) the first time you use it. Even if the person asking you used an acronym or two themselves - us non-techies can sometimes pick up random bits and snippets but that does not imply that we know everything from that level of complexity! It's like someone who saw a documentary on tigers once, but doesn't know anything about lions.
Don't attempt to turn a non-techie into a techie! That is NOT how to get more people to use better software! It is a worthwhile endeavour *for those people* who are interested in learning about programming and such, but not everyone is interested. And even for those who are, this is a derailment.
If the object is to get/enable someone to USE better software, don't slide into discussions about how to UNDERSTAND or even CODE it, without realising that that's where you're heading.
Beware of unintentional gatekeeping and elitism. A lot of us have been badly and repeatedly burned and will get turned off by this. Insisting that people will be welcoming and friendly does not help, simply prove it by doing it.
Don't assume that everyone should understand how tech works. Most people don't know how most things that make our society function, work. And that's what makes our society function at this complicated level!
What the average person needs to know is instead how they can interface and interact with the tech. How they can make it work for them. And the most important safety rules.
An analogy: Most people don't want or need to know how to build or fix cars, but they should know to put on seat belts and not to run onto streets. If you are an car enthusiast and a tricycle person asks you how to buy a used car, you (hopefully) wouldn't tell them how to modify engines.
Do not expect or require people to have or make any accounts to find out information about your service (or to use it, if that's not strictly necessary).
Have a *website* that is clear and functional and answers such questions as:
WHAT is this thing and WHO is it for and WHAT does it do and WHY should I care/give you money/time?
Where can I get help?
Does it still exist or am I looking at a relic? When was the site last updated? (USE TIMESTAMPS!) If a 10yo site is still relevant, that's cool as long as I have some way to judge it.
If you made an app or program, let us download it from your site rather than having to use the google or apple stores.
Tell us what your favourite software (or non-fave) offers us and what our options are, what we can DO with the tech solution WITHOUT understanding any of the techie stuff.
Try to empower people to do what THEY want rather than what you wish they wanted.
Steer clear of value judgements or vague judgements like "this is buggy, that is laggy, the other thing has sold out to big tech." Everyone disagrees on these judgements and the non-techie is shut out of the conversation and it feels very condescending (even if not intended as such!)
I don't know if you're a gamer who thinks anything below 120 frames per second is "laggy" or a retro machine connoisseur who likes making a cup of tea while the modem boots up.
Be specific about *examples*, not tech specifications or jargon.
Examples that a user would notice: "you'll have to wait up to a minute for it to load in x circumstance" or "you will often run into error messages instead of being able to send and receive a message" or "it doesn't require your phone number to create an account"
Don't rely on emotions to get people to do something or use or not use a certain software. Advertising leads by example and does this to all of us a lot, but there are other avenues besides this and "geek out about tech stuff" or "tell them they should just do what you want them to do."
Examples of what not to do: "If you use big corpo app, the government will SPY on you!" "These devs are so poor and work so hard and they're good people!" "Well I guess if you just want the EASY solution..." (making it sound like you meant "lazy")
These things can all be true and even important, but relying mostly on emotion to make decisions is not empowering.
Asking if X, Y or Z is most important/ which of these they can live without, is really helpful! Us non-techies have a hard time knowing what the options are when faced with open-ended questions like "what do you need?"
Being told "there are 2, 12, 200 options out there that do what you need" is really reassuring! If no perfect solution exists, it is very helpful to know what the tradeoffs are. "It can be free, easy or fast but not all three" is sad but a basis for an informed choice.
