Nice things. First time - a male Linnet was singing this morning in the hedge opposite our gate at 8am.
(Full disclosure, I couldn't really hear his song because of a blackbird singing loudly behind me.)

I'm not happy with this picture because it isn’t sharp even though they weren't that far away. But it was probably the most surprising AND exhausting encounter. One afternoon I saw a flock of birds flying over me that made noises I didn't recognize. In the end it turned out that they were linnets. I had never seen these birds before and I already knew from other people that they were very shy. They flew from field to field no matter how slowly and quietly I crept up. They let me walk several hundred meters until I was too tired. This went on for 3 days until they surprisingly sat in a tree directly above me after I had actually sat down in front of a field again. There were probably 30-40 birds. They were pretty chill in the tree and didn't pay any attention to me. They probably felt sorry for me that I had to walk so much in the last few days because of them ^^ in the end I'm happy about the encounter, hopefully I‘ll see them next year again.

🇺🇸: The linnet (Linaria cannabina) is a bird species from the finch family (Fringillidae). They have a body length of about 13 to 14 centimeters. The wingspan is about 23 centimeters, and the body weight is usually between 15 and 20 grams. It inhabits Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and western Central Asia. It also lives on the Canary Islands and Madeira. It feeds on seeds of all stages of maturity from a wide variety of herbaceous plants, as well as trees.

I rarely get opportunities to photograph these birds. I guess they're not too common any more. And quite flighty.

They glow in the snow though. Beautiful.

Vitifer mine, #Dartmoor #Devon is an interesting place whether you like old industrial sites, wildlife or both. I was hoping to catch the adult Meadow Pipit feeding its young but it didn't return before a Linnet and then a Blackbird pushed the youngster away.

A fabulous day trip to #Lundy organised by #DevonBirds. Excellent company and 42 species of #Birds -- I guess the highlights were the Puffin, a female Whinchat and a female Golden Oriole but the pint in the Marisco Tavern was good too 😀
